A former Erie home-improvement contractor will face more sets of criminal charges when the state and local police cases against him reach court.
Eight new sets of charges were filed last week against 50-year-old Martin J. Deniziak, and a ninth case is pending, according to court records and police. There are now 22 active cases against the Millcreek Township resident, according to court records.
All of the cases are being handled in Erie 4th Ward District Judge Tom Robie's office. Deniziak was scheduled to appear before Robie for preliminary hearings today, but the hearings have been delayed until March 11.
Deniziak, who is listed in court records as president of the former Deniziak Siding Inc. in Erie, is accused in all of the cases of taking money for work but failing to do the work or refund the money.
The money listed as taken in complaints filed this week includes $638 for a project in the 3200 block of Harvard Boulevard in October 2011; $1,500 taken for a project in the 400 block of Shenley Drive in October; and $1,475 taken for a project in the 400 block of Brandes Street on July 31.
Erie police Detective David Walker, who has filed the bulk of the criminal complaints against Deniziak, wrote in some of the complaints that Deniziak closed his business in October.
Deniziak's lawyer, Philip Friedman, has said Deniziak's business had failed, and that was the reason for the problems.
Millcreek Township police and the Pennsylvania State Police also have filed charges against Deniziak.
He was most recently arraigned Jan. 3 on a felony count of theft by deception for allegedly taking $2,314 for a project he was hired to do, but didn't, on Oakmont Avenue in the township on Aug. 7, according to police.
Deniziak was released on unsecured bond in the case.
