Group calls for HIV screening of teens who have sex (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? All sexually active adolescents should be screened for HIV, the American Academy of Pediatrics said Monday in a new policy statement that broadens earlier recommendations.

And in areas with higher rates of the infection, all teens over 16 should get the test, the group added in its statement.

More than 1.1 million Americans are infected with HIV, and 55,000 of them are between 13 and 24 years old.

"Forty-eight percent of the youth who are infected don't know they are infected," said Dr. Jaime Martinez of the University of Illinois in Chicago, who helped write the new report, published in the journal Pediatrics.

"It's important to realize that those who don't know they are infected drive the epidemic," he told Reuters Health.

HIV usually proceeds to AIDS in the absence of treatment, but newer drugs can keep that from happening for many years. And knowing you're infected may also help stem transmission of the disease to others -- a benefit that isn't seen with cancer screening, for instance.

Today, many doctors only offer testing to patients they deem at risk, such as prostitutes, drug addicts and homosexual men. But since 2006, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have urged everybody older than 13 to get an HIV test regardless of risk factors in areas with many undiagnosed cases.

The new statement is a bit more conservative, said Martinez, lest pediatricians be uncomfortable testing younger teenagers. He added that in 12th grade, more than 60 percent of adolescents say they are sexually active -- and that often they're having sex while under the influence.

An HIV test costs about $14, according to Martinez, and is accurate more than 99 percent of the time. Overall, less than one percent of the tests sound a false alarm.

Martinez acknowledged that a few people might be treated without harboring the virus, but added that even if the first test is positive, it still needs to be confirmed by a second before a diagnosis is made -- so the odds of treating someone mistakenly are very small.

"I hope pediatricians will feel comfortable offering this test," he said.

But not all experts are convinced screening everybody is the way to go.

Last week, a large study from French hospitals showed more than 1,000 adults would need to be tested for HIV to find just one new infection, making the researchers question routine screening (see Reuters Health story of October 24, 2011).

Given similar low yields from other studies, the government-backed U.S. Preventive Services Task Force makes no recommendations to the general public about HIV screening, although it urges high-risk groups to get screened.

Dr. Jason Haukoos at the Denver Health Medical Center is among the critics of sweeping screening programs.

"There is reasonable evidence to support screening, but it is not clear what the best approach is," he told Reuters Health. "I think the policy statement is a reasonable statement, but I say that recognizing that they don't take it far enough in terms of how this should be done."

For example, he said, there are still questions about consent and disclosure when it comes to children. And it's unclear who would pay for the extra screening.

"The big issue here is, we don't know if it's cost-effective," Haukoos said.

Stewart wins at Martinsville; closes in on Edwards

MARTINSVILLE, Virginia (AP) ? Tony Stewart hadn't won a race all season and didn't list himself as a championship contender when asked to handicap the field before NASCAR's 10-race playoffs got going.

Now, his third championship is there for the taking.

"We've had one of those up-and-down years and we're having a run in this Chase and now we're hungry," Stewart said after his third victory in the first seven Chase races moved him within eight points of leader Carl Edwards. "We're hungry for this. I feel like our mindset into these next three weeks, we've been nice all year to a lot of guys, given guys a lot of breaks.

"We're cashing tickets in these next three weeks."

Stewart won this one by passing Jimmie Johnson on a restart with three laps to go Sunday.

Stewart then playfully called out Edwards.

"He better be worried. That's all I've got to say," Stewart said in Victory Lane, a broad smile spreading across his face. "He's not going to sleep for the next three weeks."

Stewart moved from 19 points behind leader Edwards and in fourth place to just eight points behind in second as several contenders got caught up in a season-high 18 caution flags.

Even Stewart had trouble, at one point having to apologize to race leader Denny Hamlin for racing him hard to stay on the lead lap. And that was with less than 200 laps to go.

"I was pretty mad all day, but I was the only guy who didn't get in a wreck with somebody, so I was kind of proud of that," Stewart said, adding that crew chief Darian Grubber, his spotter and several team members told him before the race to stop being so nice on the track.

The winning pass, to Johnson's outside, surprised even him.

"I don't think anybody has ever passed Jimmie Johnson on the outside," he said, crediting Grubb for making the right calls and adjustments all race long. "I don't think we had the best race car today, by any means, but we had the most determined pit crew."

Johnson, for much of the day, looked like he might be the one making a huge gain in the points race, especially as Edwards floundered in the mid-20s and wasn't getting any better.

The cautions, which slowed things for 108 laps, also a season high, allowed Johnson to weather a call by crew chief Chad Knaus to stay out when all the leaders behind him pitted for fresh tires with just over 40 laps to go. But he couldn't hold on with Stewart pressing him at the end.

"I just could not get away from him on the restart," he said, adding that he tried to be cognizant of Stewart's better position in the championship battle. "I thought about going in there and leaning on him, move him up, but that is just not the right thing to do."

Stewart last won the championship in 2005.

Edwards laughed when told about Stewart's challenge.

"He's wound up. He won the race. We'll see what happens at Texas," Edwards said. "I told you guys I thought he was one of the guys that could win this race and be a guy that you'd have to beat for the championship and I think he's proving that right now. But yeah, we'll have fun.

"We'll go race hard. They're going to have to race us, too. I'm excited about the next three races."

Edwards struggled all day, twice needing the get a free pass as the first car a lap down. He made it pay off the second time, adjusting his car and rallying to finish an unlikely ninth.

"That's just a gift," he said. "We did not deserve to finish ninth."

Given his history at Martinsville, where he has struggled, Edwards felt like he'd won.

"I had become OK with the fact that we were probably going to finish 20th or 25th," he said. "I was thinking already about Texas and how we were going to have to go there and everything we were going to do, but my guys stuck with it and we got very, very fortunate."

Others deserved much better than what they got, namely Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski. They started the day second and third in points, and both were running near the front all day until getting caught up in late accidents. Kenseth finished 31st and Keselowski wound up 17th.

It seemed especially harsh for Kenseth, who was doing uncharacteristically well for him on the 0.526-mile oval until tangling with Kyle Busch on lap 464. Kenseth wound up in the garage.

"That ruined my day, along with his and whoever else got unfortunately collected in that mess," Kenseth said about Busch, who also ran up front all day but limped home in 27th place.

Kenseth was running eighth when he crashed. Keselowski also was running eighth.

Jeff Gordon finished third, and saw plenty of mayhem all race long.

"That was crazy. The racing was crazy," he said.

Kevin Harvick finished fourth and moved into third in the points race, 21 behind Edwards. Hamlin was fourth, followed by Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Martin Truex Jr.

Johnson, who started the day seventh in points, moved into sixth with his second-place run, but is still 43 points off the lead in search of his sixth consecutive championship.

Nokia announces the Lumia 800, the 'first real Windows Phone' (video)

Finally, here it is. The flagship device Nokia is counting on to bring a smile to our phone-loving faces, a sigh of relief to its shareholders, and a twinkle to the eyes of Finnish tax collectors everywhere. And, guess what? This heavily leaked handset might just live up to our high expectations. From the outside, the Lumia 800 is very similar to our beloved N9. Dubbed the "first real Windows Phone," this device is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU and is sculpted from the same 12.1mm (0.48-inch) thick piece of durable polycarbonate plastic, with tapered edges on the top and bottom to give it that industrial look and make it feel thinner than it really is. Sitting at the top of the device is Nokia's logo, just above the company's curved ClearBlack AMOLED (800 x 480) display, with a Carl Zeiss optics-enhanced lens around back. The Lumia 800 also packs 16GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM and 25GB of free SkyDrive space, and features Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and ESPN Sports Hub baked into its OS. As for that OS, it's all about a fresh beginning: those bold squares you see on the screen are, of course, the sleek live tiles of Windows Phone Mango.

The eight megapixel camera, meanwhile, packs an f/2.2 aperture, and is designed specifically for low-light environments. It seems pretty similar to what you'll find in the N9, and according to Nokia, it's simply a shooter that works for "ordinary people, under ordinary circumstances." You'll also find quad-band GSM support, with HSDPA download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. Now, for the basics: the Lumia 800 is priced at €420, or about $585. It's already up for pre-order now, and is scheduled to roll out across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, beginning in November. It'll make its way to Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the end of the year, and will hit "further markets" sometime next year. Check out a few more pics in the galleries below, or head past the break for a design video, and the official PR. For even more details, check out the Lumia 800 product page, linked below.

What is it like to work at the Large Hadron Collider?

Amita Raval, particle physicist

IMG_1510.JPG

Known worldwide by its French acronym, CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, Switzerland, is the Vatican of particle physics - only true seekers need apply. Luckily for me, I am deemed one of them.

What we seek at CERN are the building blocks of the universe and the accompanying manual that nature uses to assemble them. We do this with the help of a highly complex machine made up of one particle accelerator - the Large Hadron Collider - and six detectors, all found 100 metres below the surface of the Earth. The accelerator collides beams of protons travelling at close to the speed of light. The detectors, some the size of cathedrals, capture these collisions at a mind-numbingly fast rate. Think of a 100-megapixel camera taking 40 million frames every second.

We create these collisions for two reasons. First, the best way to study what something is made of is to break it up and examine the debris. Additionally, it is also possible to create new particles by smashing the beams together.

I am one of more than 3000 physicists and engineers working on the CMS experiment, one of the six detectors. A typical workday on CMS involves a myriad of different activities, including searching for signs of the Higgs boson or other new particles, writing up what we find in journal papers, attending meetings, developing new software and thinking of machine upgrades. Multitasking is essential!

Since it costs so much to build machines like the LHC, no country can do it by itself. The CMS experiment alone includes people from 183 institutes in 38 countries. This means I get to work with people from all over the world and travel to far-flung places.

What impresses me is how people from diverse backgrounds and work ethics come together to work in (mostly) healthy competition and collaboration towards a common goal. They are not motivated by money but by the quest for knowledge. Noble, but it's not all champagne and roses, of course. The day-to-day coordination of these collaborations, which are run democratically, is not a trivial matter. Everyone has their own opinions on just about everything so at times it can be difficult to reach a consensus. Although we always manage to, sometimes getting everyone on board requires United Nations-style negotiations and diplomacy.

I arrived at the world's most exciting particle physics laboratory via a rather convoluted route. My undergraduate degree was in electrical engineering at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. I subsequently enjoyed working as an engineer but something was missing. It didn't evoke the same sense of awe I had experienced while studying the physics required for my degree, so I went back to university to do a master's in neutrino physics. This was followed by a PhD in particle physics at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. I came to CERN to work on the CMS experiment two years ago and soon, I will be off to Princeton University to teach physics and continue research on CMS.

CERN is an incredibly exciting place to work. To get here you need a solid scientific background, lots of hard work and discipline. You need to be prepared to work long days and, very often, nights. But even this is not enough. To get to a place like CERN, the single most essential requirement is a fundamental curiosity about nature and a continuous desire to learn. But once you get here, you will find your education has only just begun.

Amita will continue blogging for Big Wide World over the coming months

Wiz Khalifa/ Snoop Dogg's 'High School' Soundtrack A 'Big Deal'

'I'm a fan of it, separate myself from making it. ... Can't wait,' Wiz tells Mixtape Daily.

The O.D.: A Mixtape Exclusive

Sure, Wiz Khalifa was only 5 years old when Snoop Dogg first stepped onto the scene as a guest on Dr. Dre's 1992 classic "Deep Cover," but the two cannabis-loving MCs won't let their respective ages get in the way of collaboration. Wiz and Snoop will star alongside each other in the upcoming Dylan Brown-directed stoner comedy "Mac and Devin Go to High School" as well as on its smoked-out soundtrack.

Mixtape Daily caught up with the Doggfather and Khalifa on the set for "Young, Wild and Free," the soundtrack's official first single, and got the scoop on the rest of the LP.

"We got the homey Juicy J on the soundtrack, we got Curren$y on the soundtrack, but mainly it's just me and Dogg," Wiz revealed. Overall, Khalifa is just hyped up to work with one of his idols. They linked on Wiz's "Black & Yellow" remix, Snoop's "This Weed Iz Mine," as well as a bunch of underground songs like "That Good" and "French Inhale."

"It's a real big deal because nobody's done it like that as far as a veteran in the game, an OG, a pioneer and then the newest, youngest, most exciting dude in rap coming through and really just giving people a complete project," Wiz said. "I'm a fan of it, separate myself from making it, [I'm] a huge fan of it. Can't wait." As far as the musical vibe of the soundtrack, a laidback Snoop tried his best to describe it. "It's something to relax you and get you through the day; it's some real good music. The music is quality, I don't even have no title for it, as far as what kinda music is it, it's centric, it's ...," Dogg said searching for the right words before his partner-in-rhyme lent a hand. "Eclectic," Wiz chimed in.

"Yeah, that's probably what it is," Snoop finished. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines.

Israeli FM says Abbas is 'obstacle' to peace (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israel's foreign minister charged Monday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is an "obstacle" to peace and that he hopes Abbas will soon resign.

The comments by Avigdor Lieberman drew an angry response from Palestinians, who accused him of calling for an assassination and appealed to the United States and the European Union to intervene.

In a briefing with reporters, Lieberman lashed out at the Palestinian leader, saying Abbas has been leading a campaign to delegitimize Israel internationally and that he has become an "obstacle that needs to be removed."

Abbas is leading a drive for U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state. On Monday his envoy urged the world body not to delay acting on the Palestinian request. Israel and the United States fiercely oppose the bid, saying independence can be reached only through negotiations.

Peace talks have been largely frozen for more than two years. They broke down the last time over the issue of construction in Israeli settlements.

In the past, Abbas has repeatedly threatened to resign if there is no progress in peace efforts. Lieberman called on him to carry out his threat.

"He has been threatening to return the keys and resign? That would not be a threat but a blessing, and I wish he would finally do it," Lieberman said. "Whoever comes after him will be better ... there is no lack of Palestinians who studied in the West ? educated people with Western values with whom we can talk."

Lieberman said that despite Abbas' moderate image, he was naming public squares after terrorists, handing out money to killers who were released in last week's prisoner swap and calling for a future Palestinian state that was free of Jews.

Lieberman added that Abbas was concerned only about his personal survival after the overthrow of his "friends" in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

"That is very understandable, but it doesn't help in reaching an agreement," he said.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, a top aide to Abbas, fired back, calling Lieberman the "most extreme, racist person in Israel."

"Lieberman is an enemy of peace and he should be condemned by every rational voice in Israel," he said. "If this position represents or reflects the policy of this government, that means that they intend to wage a political war. The Israeli government should apologize for what the foreign minister said."

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat added that Lieberman's comments amounted to incitement and could be interpreted as a call to assassinate Abbas. He said he relayed that message to Americans and Europeans as well.

It wasn't clear whether Lieberman was expressing his own opinion or government policy. He's spoken out of step with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before, most notably when he told the United Nations that there was no point in negotiating with Palestinians ? just as peace talks were being relaunched in September 2010.

A Netanyahu spokesman refused to comment Monday.

Lieberman is known for his fiery nature and outspoken criticism of Palestinians. He's also a contentious figure because of his support for redrawing Israel's borders to push areas with heavy concentrations of Israeli Arabs out of Israel and into Palestinian jurisdiction. He also launched a failed effort in parliament to force Israeli Arabs to take a loyalty oath or lose their citizenship.

Lieberman said he was "100 percent" sure that the establishment of a Palestinian state in the current climate would lead to rocket attacks against major Israeli population centers. Gaza militants have fired thousands of rockets at Israel since Israel's pullout in 2005.

He also vowed that there would be no settlement construction slowdown. He noted that the settlements made up less than two percent of the West Bank and therefore "have never been an obstacle to peace."

Sarkozy yields on ECB crisis role, pressure on Italy (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? European Union leaders made some progress toward a strategy to fight the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis on Sunday, nearing agreement on bank recapitalization and on how to leverage their rescue fund to try to stop bond market contagion.

But final decisions were deferred until a second summit on Wednesday and sharp differences remain over the size of losses private holders of Greek government bonds will have to accept.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy backed down in the face of implacable German opposition to his desire to use unlimited European Central Bank funds to fight the crisis. Instead, the euro zone may turn to emerging economies such as China and Brazil for help in underpinning its sickly bond market.

"Further work is still needed and that is why we will take the decisions in the follow-up euro zone summit," European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said after chairing 12 hours of talks.

He indicated that Italy, the euro zone state now in the markets' firing line, had been told to come up with a more convincing plan this week to implement structural economic reforms to raise its growth potential.

"Between now and Wednesday, some members of the European Council will have to convince colleagues that their country is implementing the promised measures fully," Van Rompuy said.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he expected to call a cabinet meeting on Monday to discuss measures to boost growth, as Italy came under mounting pressure from European partners to step up reforms to restore market confidence.

Sarkozy acknowledged that France's proposal to multiply the firepower of the euro zone's rescue fund by turning it into a bank and letting it borrow from the ECB would not fly for now because neither Germany nor the central bank accepted it.

"No solution is viable if it doesn't have the support of all the European institutions," the French leader told a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel said only two options remained on the table for leveraging the 440 billion euro ($600 billion) European Financial Stability Facility, and neither involved drawing on the central bank. Van Rompuy said, however, that some form of ECB involvement could not be entirely discounted.

Officials said the emerging solution would combine using the EFSF to provide partial guarantees to buyers of new Italian and Spanish bonds, while also creating a special purpose vehicle to attract funds from major emerging countries that could guarantee bonds in the secondary market.

It remains to be seen whether that will convince investors that euro zone government bonds are safe after expected heavy write-downs on Greek debt.

"This is not going to be the 'shock and awe' solution to really impress the markets given there are still a lot of details to be worked out and there is still a great deal of uncertainty about how this is to be implemented," WestLB rate strategist Michael Leister told Reuters.

Leaders endorsed a broad framework drafted by their finance ministers for recapitalising European banks, which regulators say need between 100 and 110 billion euros to cope with likely losses on Greek and other euro zone sovereign bonds.

WRANGLING

Much time was spent on procedural wrangling with non-euro members Britain and Poland demanding that all 27 EU states, including the 10 that are not in the single currency, be fully involved in the crisis response. That forced the calling of another full EU summit for one hour on Wednesday.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said there was a danger that euro zone countries would otherwise start taking decisions on their own that affect the EU's single market.

With alarm growing in Washington, Beijing and other capitals about potential damage to the global economy, Europe is under pressure to put in place a comprehensive strategy in time for a November 3-4 G20 summit in France to halt the crisis.

They aim to agree on reducing Greece's debt burden, strengthening European banks, improving euro area economic governance and maximising the firepower of the EFSF.

Merkel told reporters that the decisions to be taken on Wednesday would not be the last step to overcome the crisis.

Before then, she must obtain parliamentary approval from her fractious center-right coalition for the latest series of increasingly unpopular bailout measures.

Merkel and Sarkozy began the day with a 30-minute private meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to ram home what a German official called "the urgent necessity of credible and concrete reform steps in euro area states."

LIFELINE

Finance ministers made progress at preparatory sessions on Friday and Saturday, agreeing to release an 8 billion euro ($11 billion) lifeline loan for Greece and to seek a far bigger write-down on Greek debt by private bondholders.

A document prepared by the ministers and seen by Reuters outlined possible guarantee schemes to help banks secure access to wholesale funding at a time when many are shut out of inter-bank lending.

The key outstanding issues were how to make Greece's debt burden manageable and how to scale up the rescue fund to shield Italy and Spain, the euro area's third and fourth largest economies, from bond market turmoil that has forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal into EU-IMF bailouts.

A debt sustainability study by international lenders showed that only losses of 50-60 percent for private bondholders would make Greek debt, forecast to reach 160 percent of GDP this year, sustainable in the long term.

"This debt is onerous and must lighten for us to breathe again," Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou told reporters.

A senior German banker close to the talks said the banks had offered to take a 40 percent "voluntary" writedown but governments were demanding they write off 60 percent.

This is much more than a 21 percent net present value loss agreed with investors on July 21 and some officials question whether it can be achieved voluntarily, or only through a forced default that would trigger wider market turmoil.

"It's a poker game until Wednesday," one negotiator said.

A Reuters poll of economists -- many of them from European banks -- showed last week they expected private investors would have to shoulder losses of around 50 percent.

Analysts say the proposed bond insurance scheme could have perverse effects and remove incentives for states like Italy to take action to reduce debt.

The European Banking Authority told European Union finance ministers on Saturday that if all such bank assets were valued at market prices, EU banks would need 100-110 billion euros of new capital to have a 9 percent core tier 1 capital ratio.

Ministers agreed to give banks until June 2012 to achieve this capital ratio, first using their own funds or from private investors, and if that fails, by using public money from governments or as a last resort the EFSF.

However, EU sources said that figure appeared to include some 46 billion euros already earmarked for bank support in the EU/IMF bailout programmes for Ireland, Greece and Portugal.

Markets may be disappointed if the actual capital injection is only 60-70 billion euros, compared to recent estimates of a need for up to 200 billion euros.

VFW rebuilding after tornado

INDIANTOWN, Fla. - Some Treasure Coast military veterans make it a point to reach out to other vets as well as our current servicemen and women.

Now, they're finding themselves with a great need of their own.

On Tuesday, a tornado destroyed VFW Post # 6023 in Indiantown. The vets were just days away from holding their largest fundraiser ever. This weekend, they're moving forward with their plans.

The VFW planned a weekend of activities for months. They decided that even with no roof over their heads, they would still help veterans and the military.

What they found in return was a grateful community eager to show its support.

From great music to great food, VFW Post # 6023 held a party with a purpose.

"Here's a five," said one man handing a volunteer a five dollar bill to make a donation.

This Treasure Coast community is eager to help the VFW rebuild.

"All the VFWs in the United States of America should contribute," said Charlie Craig of Indianwood, who comes here often.

"It was a disaster. They need help," said Craig.

"Two minutes!" shouted Lynn Wilhoit from the outdoor kitchen where she and other volunteers were busy frying up 100 lbs. of catfish.

The VFW is finding help with every catfish dinner served and contribution received as individuals and businesses do what they can to help.

"I can't believe it," said VFW Post # 6023 Commander David Shelton. "It's a display of camraderie and help.? It's a wonderful thing, it's overwhelming."

The people in this Treasure Coast community say doing their part is not an option, it's just something you do.

"It was very important to help rebuild and help the community come together," explained Leona Jones of Indianwood, who came to dinner with her family.

"It's a family oriented post," said Bob Romesberg, a post member.

"It's special.? We're a small rural community and we help each other.? We stick together," said Romesberg.

VFW Commander Shelton is still not sure how much it will cost to replace their building.

While the contents were insured, the building was uninsurable because of its age.

If you'd like to help the VFW, they have a number of activities going on all weekend long.

You can also mail donations to: VFW Post # 6023, 16701 SW Morgan Street, Indiantown, FL 34956. Make checks payable to VFW Post # 6023.

San Francisco Earthquake: Second Tremor Jolts Northern California

The San Francisco Bay Area shook with its second earthquake of the day Thursday night, likely an aftershock from the earlier 4.0 temblor that struck near Berkeley. According to USGS, the latest jolt measured 3.9 on the richter scale and hit at 8:16pm PST.

The quakes came on the heels of California's "ShakeOut" drill, during which residents across the state prepared for disaster.

This is a developing story...

Pete Seeger and pals attend NYC protest action (AP)

NEW YORK ? Folk music legend Pete Seeger joined in the Occupy Wall Street protest Friday night, replacing his banjo with two canes as he marched with throngs of people in New York City's tony Upper West Side past banks and shiny department stores.

The 92-year-old Seeger, accompanied by musician-grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger, composer David Amram, and bluesman Guy Davis, shouted out a verse as the crowd of about 1,000 people sang and chanted.

They marched peacefully over more than 30 blocks from Symphony Space, where the Seegers and other musicians performed, to Columbus Circle. Police watched from the sidelines.

At the circle, Seeger and friends walked to the chant of "We are the 99 percent" and "We are unstoppable, another world is possible." Seeger stopped to bang a metal statue of an elephant with his cane ? to cheers from the crowd.

At the center of the circle, Seeger and Amram were joined by `60s folk singer Arlo Guthrie in a round of "We Shall Overcome," a protest anthem made popular by Seeger.

After more singing, Seeger asked for a mic check to tell the crowd: "The words are simple: I could be happy spending my days on the river that flows both way-ay-ays."

During the march, the younger Seeger, in troubadour fashion like his grandfather, walked among the protesters playing songs. Amra took up a flute and others enlivened the night protest with the sounds of the accordion, banjos, and guitars.

At the front of the throng, marchers held American flags and a large blue flag that said: "Revolution Generation ... Debt is Slavery." Along the way, the crowd sang protest songs made popular or written by Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and others of the protest era.

Occupy Wall Street began a month ago in lower Manhattan among a few young people, and has grown to thousands around the country and the world. An Associated Press-GfK poll says more than one-third of the country supports the Wall Street protesters, and even more ? 58 percent ? say they are furious about America's politics.

Clinton in Kabul to push Afghan reconciliation (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is in Afghanistan on an unannounced visit aimed at encouraging the country's wary leadership to keep up Taliban reconciliation efforts as the Obama administration presses ahead with troop withdrawal plans.

Clinton arrived in Kabul late Wednesday and will see President Hamid Karzai, other top Afghan officials and civic leaders on Thursday. Her trip comes as Karzai has expressed frustration with attempts to woo Taliban fighters away from the insurgency amid increasing attacks by the Taliban-allied, Pakistan-based Haqqani network.

The U.S. sees a political settlement with the Taliban as key to ending the war and is pushing Karzai to lead and expand a reconciliation drive, although the Taliban has indicated no public interest in such a deal. A secret U.S. effort to spark negotiations earlier this year angered Karzai.

At the same time, the goal of reconciling fighters who renounce al-Qaida, violence and embrace Afghanistan's constitution was dealt a major blow with the assassination last month of elder statesman Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was leading Karzai's outreach. Rabbani was killed when he greeted a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban emissary bearing a reconciliation message.

Karzai has cited the killing as a reason why peace efforts are futile. He lamented recently that although he wants to continue, neighboring Pakistan should be in the lead since the Taliban high command lives there. In addition, spectacular attacks ? like one last month on the U.S. Embassy compound and the headquarters of the US-led NATO forces in Kabul ? by the Haqqani network have dented enthusiasm for the push.

Over the weekend, militants tried but failed to blast their way into an American base in eastern Afghanistan, striking before dawn with rocket-propelled grenades and a car bomb. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message sent to The Associated Press.

NATO says such spectacular strikes, many of them perpetrated by the Haqqani network, are actually down from past years. But assassinations have increased 60 percent for the same period with 131 people killed so far this year.

In addition to reconciliation, Clinton will also be pressing the Afghans on reaching a security agreement that will govern U.S.-Afghanistan relations after American troops leave. The U.S. plans to bring most forces home by 2015 and intends withdraw the 33,000 additional troops that President Barack Obama sent to Afghanistan in late 2009 by the end of the fighting season in 2012, 10,000 of them by the end of this year.

The U.S. hopes to have the security agreement ready before an international conference on Afghanistan's future in early December.

CrowdStar takes a stab at a global gaming audience | VentureBeat

Game maker?CrowdStar?is unveiling a new business strategy today to grow its game business into a multiplatform empire.

The new strategy, which the company is calling ?Project Trident? is a three-pronged approach to take a hit franchise and leverage it across multiple platforms and multiple territories,?Peter Relan, chief executive of Burlingame, Calif.-based CrowdStar, told VentureBeat. The three prongs are 1) creating mainstream female-oriented games for Facebook, 2) extending those games to smartphones and tablets and 3) launching the games in various markets in Asia.

To take its games global, CrowdStar is launching eight different variants of its popular games in the fourth quarter so that its shopping and fashion-oriented ?Girl? franchise games (It Girl on Facebook and Top Girl on mobile) will be available in all major territories in the world across 10 different social networks on the web, iOS, and Android, Relan said.

That?s a considerable jump in distribution, since the company was pretty much Facebook only at the start of the year.??So far it is going very well,? Relan said.?While the goal is to make a game that reaches a billion users, Relan said that?s still some time away.

Relan has outlined his ambitious strategy to reach a billion gamers before.

CrowdStar will take its Girl franchise into Asia in a partnership with Korea?s online game giant NHN. In a deal with NHN Japan, CrowdStar?s It Girl will debut in the Japanese market. Sometime later, the company also hopes to launch new games in Korea and China. The company plans to introduce five versions of It Girl and Top Girl across five different social networks in Asia.

For mobile games, CrowdStar?s Top Girl game has been downloaded more than 4 million times in four months. As a result, mobile game revenues are expected to be half of the company?s revenues this year. As CrowdStar takes its games to different territories, it is customizing the art, theme, characters and other details to fit the local language and culture. It Girl has 330,000 daily active users and 3.4 million monthly active users on Facebook. But the Girl franchise across all platforms has 1 million daily active users and 8 million monthly active users across Facebook, Asia, and mobile markets.

The company is still building games for Facebook and expects to launch a game this weekend. Rivals include Electronic Arts and Zynga.

X-linked mental retardation protein is found to mediate synaptic plasticity in hippocampus

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2011) ? Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) have solved part of a puzzle concerning the relationship between changes in the strength of synapses -- the tiny gaps across which nerve cells in the brain communicate -- and dysfunctions in neural circuits that have been linked with drug addiction, mental retardation and other cognitive disorders.

A team led by CSHL Professor Linda Van Aelst has pieced together essential steps in a signaling cascade within excitatory nerve cells that explains a key phenomenon called longterm depression, or LTD. The "depression" in question has nothing to do with the human illness with that name. Rather, it refers to a tamping-down of the strength of individual synapses -- what scientists call synaptic plasticity.

The mechanism behind LTD is called endocytosis. It involves a retraction of receptors where neurotransmitters can "dock." Van Aelst and colleagues have demonstrated how LTD works following activation of a class of receptors called group I metabotrobic glutamate receptors, or mGluRs.

It was known that longterm depression mediated by mGluRs depended in part on the rapid synthesis of specific proteins. Yet the identity of these proteins had largely remained a mystery. The CSHL scientists have now shown that locally rapid production of a protein called oligophrenin 1 (OPHN1) follows activation of group I mGluRs. OPHN1 in turn was shown to mediate LTD in hippocampal nerve cells, by interacting with yet another protein called EndophilinA2/3.

The result of this cascade of intracellular signals was dramatic: persistent removal of AMPA-type receptors at the excitatory synapse, and the onset of LTD. When rapid production of OPHN1 was blocked, mGluR-dependent LTD did not occur. These findings appear online ahead of print in the journal Neuron.

Van Aelst explained the significance of the finding. "OPHN1 has two important functions that we know about. One is early in development, after synapses have appeared in the emerging nervous system. In this phase, OPHN1 in concert with other factors stabilizes receptors at synapses, and thus is essential in maintaining the structure of these essential features of neural circuitry.

"Our new findings show another vital role for OPHN1, later in development and into maturity. We assume that in response to behavioral stimuli -- we aren't yet sure what kind -- mGluRs are activated, setting off the series of steps that we identified: rapid upregulation of OPHN1, which binds to EndophilinA2/3, which in turn mediates the long-term removal of AMPA receptors."

OPHN1 is known to be associated with X-linked mental retardation and with other cognitive and behavioral deficits. The team hypothesizes that OPHN1-related changes in plasticity such as those described in their new work may be causally related to such pathology. They are investigating this possibility in their current work.

This work was supported by grants from the National Institue of Mental Health and NAAR.

Radio host fired for Occupy D.C. work

A freelance radio host was fired from a documentary program that airs on NPR affiliates after she became a spokeswoman for a Washington protest because her producers believed she violated the public radio network's code of ethics, the host said Thursday.

Lisa Simeone said she was fired the previous evening from "Soundprint," a music documentary show that isn't produced by NPR but is aired by its affiliates across the country. She said the head of Soundprint Media Center Inc., which produces the show, read NPR's code of ethics to her before she was fired.

NPR also questioned Simeone's involvement in the Occupy D.C. protest and said its ethics code applies to the shows it carries. But NPR said Simeone doesn't work for the radio network, and it hadn't pressured Soundprint to fire her.

Simeone also hosts "World of Opera," a show produced by North Carolina-based music and arts station WDAV. That program is distributed by NPR. She said that station is supporting her so far.

Simeone told The Associated Press she is not a news reporter.

"I don't cover news. In none of the shows that I do, do I cover the news," she said. "What is NPR afraid I'll do? Insert a seditious comment into a synopsis of 'Madame Butterfly?'"

Simeone, who lives in Baltimore, said she has been serving with about 50 people on a steering committee for an occupation protest on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. She said it is not connected to the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York, but they share similar philosophies.

NPR issued a statement on its website Wednesday saying it had learned Simeon was participating in an Occupy D.C. group but that she is not an NPR employee.

"We're in conversations with WDAV about how they intend to handle this," the statement read. "We of course take this issue very seriously."

On Thursday, NPR spokeswoman Anna Christopher said no one at the network has had contact with producers of "Soundprint" or pressured them to fire Simeone.

As for "World of Opera," Christopher said the network's code of ethics applies to cultural programs, as well as news, that the network produces, acquires or distributes.

"We are not her employer, but she is a host for a show that we distribute," Christopher said. "She has that public presence."

WDAV, a station based in Davidson, N.C., issued a statement saying it was working with NPR to find a solution for the show.

"WDAV and NPR have different missions," WDAV spokeswoman Lisa Gray said in an emailed statement. "WDAV respects NPR's mission to serve as a leading news provider. WDAV on the other hand, exists to serve as a leading provider of arts and cultural programming nationally and internationally."

In the past year, NPR has come under scrutiny for its firing of news analyst Juan Williams after he said on Fox News that he was uncomfortable being on a plane with someone wearing clothing that identifies them as Muslim. At the time, NPR said Williams's comments violated its code of ethics by participating in media "that encourage punditry and speculation rather than fact-based analysis."

The network has been sensitive to accusations that it carries a liberal bias. An NPR CEO was forced to resign after conservative activist James O'Keefe posted a video portraying NPR's chief fundraiser complaining about the tea party's influence on the Republican Party.

Ashley Greene: Demi Lovato and I Are Like Jen and Angelina (omg!)

What would Angelina Jolie say?

Ashley Greene has heard a fair share of rumors about herself since making her mark on the Twilight film franchise, but the 24-year-old star prefers not to comment on them, telling Allure magazine's November issue that if she did, she "wouldn't have time for my day job."

PHOTOS: Ashley's sexy style

But Greene is willing to open up about her supposed feud with Demi Lovato, with whom she shares an ex-boyfriend, Joe Jonas. In fact, Greene squashes any rumored bad blood between the two starlets, telling Allure that the pair always got along.

"I'm really happy that she's doing well," Greene says of Jonas' 19-year-old songbird ex, who split from the singer shortly before he hooked up with Greene. "She and I never had a problem with each other, but, you know, it doesn't go away. Jen Aniston still gets asked about Angelina Jolie."

Calling it quits with Jonas in March, Greene says she's casting a wide net when it comes to finding her perfect match.

"I go through stages," says Greene, who has been linked to Twilight's Jackson Rathbone and Kings of Leon's Jared Followill in the time since breaking things off with Jonas. "Randomly, I'll be attracted to a crazy rocker with tattoos. And I find that I'm extremely attracted to ambition and wit. If it was appropriate to date Michael Sheen, I would, but he and his girlfriend [Rachel McAdams] are so cute."

"And maybe this is 'You want what you can't have' -- Neil Patrick Harris," she tells Allure. "And, oh, Cooper Anderson?.[I mean] Anderson Cooper. I'd be all over that."

NASA Charters Flights Aboard Virgin's SpaceShipTwo

Zothecula writes "Although Virgin Galactic is generally known as a space tourism company, it sees research experiments as a future mission segment and significant business opportunity. To this end, the company has signed a contract with NASA to provide up to three charter flights on its SpaceShipTwo suborbital spaceplane. The deal follows the curtain closing on the Space Shuttle program earlier this year and is part of NASA's Flight Opportunities Program, which is charged with providing reduced-gravity environments for research experiments while encouraging the emerging commercial space industry." In related news, a 68,000-sq. ft. facility has opened in California that will assist in the assembly of SpaceShipTwo spaceplanes.

The most commonly misunderstood fact about the job market

Small businesses account for a minority of both workers and payrolls, and are not the primary engine of job growth.

I was listening to the Diane Rehm show today when the guy from the small business lobby (NFIB) was asked whether most workers were employed by small firms. He misleadingly said they did.

Skip to next paragraph Jared Bernstein

?

Before joining the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities as a senior fellow, Jared was chief economist to Vice President Joseph Biden and executive director of the White House Task Force on the Middle Class. He is a contributor to MSNBC and CNBC and has written numerous books, including 'Crunch: Why Do I Feel So Squeezed?'

Recent posts

This is widely misunderstood, but the fact is that most businesses are small, but most employees work in large firms (the figure below focuses on ?establishments? rather than firms?the former is a single physical place of business; firms can incorporate numerous establishments; the main result is insensitive to this difference).

The above figure shows that most businesses employ few workers. Just about 50% employ four or fewer workers, and 80% of businesses employ fewer than 100 workers.

But as the second bar in each group?number of employees?shows, about half of all employees work in firms of 500 or more workers and two-thirds work in firms of at least 100 workers.

Payroll (total compensation) is even more skewed: 57% is paid out by firms of 500 or more workers; only 30% of payroll is paid by firms of less than 100 workers.

Nor is it the case that small businesses, per se, are the engine of job growth their advocates claim. Research like this finds that ?once we control for firm age there is no systematic relationship between firm size and [job] growth.? As I stress here, that research shows that it?s surviving startups that are particularly important in terms of generating new jobs.

So, summing up, small businesses, say those with 100 workers or less, account for a minority of both workers and payrolls, and are not the primary engine of job growth.

Why then all the favoritism in policy circles, which is especially problematic if you listen to the one-sided agenda of their guy on the Diane Rehm show (e.g., his organization is against extended unemployment benefits because their members allegedly report that recipients won?t take jobs until their benefits run out; Larry Mishel, along with a bunch of folks who called into the show, did a good job of calling him out)?

In part, because they need and deserve help. Larger firms have fewer credit and cash flow challenges, nor do they operate on such tight margins. It?s easier for larger firms to sell into and expand foreign markets, which is especially useful to them right now, as that?s where the growth is.

But the political clout of small businesses and the misrepresentations of folks like the guy on this show are a big problem in our politics. In this regard, small is not beautiful.
