S.Africa's Merafe sees FY earnings lower on impairment

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African ferrochrome producer Merafe Resources forecast a drop in full-year earnings on Thursday, citing an impairment loss on a potential sale of high-cost assets, lower output and weak demand.

Merafe said basic earnings per share for the year to the end of December were expected at between 1.7 and 2.0 cents, down from 4.7 cents the previous year.

Headline EPS, which exclude certain once-off items, were seen at between 4.6 and 5.1 cents, down from 6.4 cents.

The company, which operates joint ventures with London-listed Xstrata, said ferrochrome output fell 8 percent given weak demand and Merafe's participation in a power buy-back programme by state utility Eskom.

Under the arrangement with Eskom, firms agree to suspend part of their operations to help the utility manage a tight electricity supply.

"The compensation received from Eskom for the electricity not consumed was adequate to cover the costs and lost profits on the associated volumes," the company said in a statement.

Merafe shares fell 2.27 percent to 86 cents, compared with a 0.24 percent fall in Johannesburg's All-Share index.

Ferrochrome production cuts in South Africa, the world's second-biggest producer of the alloy used to make stainless steel, are likely to persist into the second quarter, boosting prices at a time of weak demand, traders said.

Merafe said the average European benchmark ferrochrome price for the first quarter of this year was settled at $1.13 per lb, up 2 percent on the previous three months.

The company will release full-year results on March 5.

The Yeshiva World VIDEO: R' Amnon Yitzchak Speaks Out ...

Following the election defeat of his Koach L?Hashpiah party, which failed to pass the minimum threshold to enter the 19th Knesset, Rav Amnon Yitzchak speaks out, in the form of a video, speaking of the ?sheker?, the lies that accompanied the election campaign and the Shas officials ?who preferred the chilonim Yair Lapid who closes kollelim and drafts Bnei Torah instead of the person who brings people back to teshuvah.

In the 17 minute video, Rav Amnon speaks of the grief caused to Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, and the chilul Hashem and unacceptable actions of the Shas officials. He speaks of the insults to Maran and the Torah due to the actions of Shas leaders, who acted inappropriately, as well as the attacks and insults against him.

?Shas officials preferred voting for Arabs instead of me.? He explains how the Shas rabbonim never bothered to inquire, to probe and verify if indeed the harsh allegations against him were founded, which of course they were not.

Rav Amnon says he does not forgive any of them for the spilling of his blood and pain and suffering caused.

Rav Amnon speaks of many cases in which they detected voter fraud, the tricks that took place, the threats, those who saw Shas people outside asking voters ?who are you voting for?, the distribution of cash and even distribution of cell phones free of charge, all to pull people from voting Koach L?Hashpiah.

The vehicles driving around Rosh Ha?ayin and Rehovot announcing that Koach L?Hashpiah closed and that Rav Amnon instructed voters to return to Shas. The rav speaks of how Shas ignored the rulings of Central Election Committee officials, conducting a campaign that was ruled illegal and unacceptable.

Rav Amnon laments how the actions of Shas leaders and supporters actually pushed some people away from being frum, not wishing to be associated with Jews like this, citing the foul play and tactics that have become Shas, actions that are not seen among the most left-wing secular party in Israel.

Rav Amnon speaks of how 30,000 rabbonim, roshei kollel and their followers used all their energy against one man, who was simply acting upon the instructions of HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita, and instead, Yair Lapid has 19 seats.

?Lapid is good for Shas while Amnon Yitzchak is very bad. Can someone please explain this to me? he adds.

Leftist ex-PM Zeman wins Czech presidential election

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Leftist former prime minister Milos Zeman won the Czech Republic's first direct presidential election on Saturday, beating a conservative opponent he had accused of favoring foreign interests in a bitter campaign.

Zeman, a 68-year-old who favors more integration within the European Union, won by 54.8 to 45.2 percent over Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, results from 99.9 percent of voting districts showed.

Economic forecaster Zeman, a Communist Party member before the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, will steer Czechs closer to Europe's mainstream.

The anti-EU rhetoric of outgoing President Vaclav Klaus, who succeeded late playwright Vaclav Havel, has pushed the country towards the margins of the 27-member bloc.

Czech presidents do not wield much day-to-day power but represent the country abroad and appoint prime ministers, central bankers and judges.

Zeman said he wants to overcome divisions provoked by the election in the central European country of 10.5 million people. The final stage of the campaign was marked by doubts cast on the national loyalties of Schwarzenberg, a prince from a centuries-old aristocratic family who lived much of his life in Austria.

Zeman promised to tackle graft, an issue which has dominated political debate for years.

"I want to be president of the bottom 10 million. These include voters of Milos Zeman as well as Karel Schwarzenberg. I do not want to be president of mafias that act as parasites on this society," Zeman said.

Zeman served as Social Democrat prime minister in 1998-2002 under a power-sharing deal with Klaus's right-wing party that critics saw as a breeding ground for corruption.

Schwarzenberg conceded defeat and congratulated Zeman, but relations between the centre-right cabinet and new president may be strained.

Zeman, who has a folksy manner and a well-advertised appetite for sausages and alcohol, appeals to poorer and rural voters, unlike the government, which has raised taxes, cut social benefits and suffered several corruption scandals.

During his premiership, Zeman was credited with privatizing the main banks and attracting foreign investment. Opponents criticize his friendship with former communist officials and businessmen with links to Russia.

Previously, Czech presidents were elected by parliamentary votes that involved a lot of back-room dealing, which led to popular demand for a constitutional change approved last year.

GHOSTS OF THE PAST

The finale of the campaign was marked by appeals to nationalism, unusual for the Czech Republic, whose biggest trading partner is Germany.

Zeman accused Schwarzenberg of backing the cause of some three million ethnic Germans, known as Sudeten Germans, who were expelled from then-Czechoslovakia after World War Two.

Schwarzenberg has said that in today's world, the expulsion could be seen as a war crime, but denied allegations he would open the door for demands to return confiscated property.

Klaus backed Zeman in the vote, saying he wanted a president who had lived in the country all his life, unlike Schwarzenberg, whose family has large land holdings in Austria where he lived in exile during the 1948-1989 communist rule.

Schwarzenberg said the election was won by lies.

"The difference of 10 percentage points was the result of this kind of campaign," he said. "It is impossible to defend against certain type of bad-mouthing."

The social network where we're all just a number ? Tech News and ...

If you Google my name, you?ll find there?s an Eliza Kern listed on a bunch of social networks. There?s an Eliza Kern on Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Foursquare, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, along with a whole host of others I can?t even remember. For most of them, it?s pretty clear that those Eliza Kerns are actually me ? they either have my photo attached, or somehow indicate the person who?controls that account.

But what if I wanted to go online and post some thoughts or ideas that wouldn?t be associated with my identity? What if I was secretly a cat person (the horror) and wanted to talk about my love of cats, or had a really?embarrassing?disease I wanted to talk about with other people??These might not be things I?d tweet about. But maybe I?d head to the new anonymous social network called Social Number, which is?trying to give people a voice online without an associated identity.

Internet anonymity has a long and controversial history ? it?s a unique feature of the web that has provided additional levels of safety for whistle-blowers and human rights advocates, but it?s also given rise to the internet troll and a host of other despicable behaviors that come from expression without much fear of consequence. And as the New York Times pointed out, it?s nothing new.

Currently, anonymity is most common on internet forums and within comment sections of websites like Gawker, where allowing people to post without their identities?has become controversial, as my colleague Mathew Ingram has written about extensively. Mainstream?social networks have generally discouraged anonymity. Facebook has pushed to get users to connect with their real names and appear in Facebook search as themselves, with an obvious benefit to the company as it works to advertise against that content and control your digital identity.?But for?political dissidents or people whose workplaces or families disapprove of their political leanings or sexual orientations, the benefits of real names are less clear.

On Social Number, which launched in December and already has thousands of registered users?according to the company, individuals sign up and pick a long number that becomes their identity on the network, which doesn?t rely on names or usernames like other sites. Users can then post about topics and have discussions ranging from reducing your carbon footprint?to dealing with a bad boss?to?atheism. The CEO of the company, who goes by MK and declined to provide his full name citing anonymity concerns,?said the anonymity is crucial to the site?s success:

Social Number sign-up page homescreen screenshot?Taboo discussions are popular. They?re afraid if they go to Facebook and type in their political affiliations it?ll get them in trouble with their boss. Here they can critique anything,? he said. ?They can talk about things like?substance abuse and don?t have to reveal their identity. Although?surprisingly?a lot of innocent topics as well, like cooking and Valentine?s Day.?

4chan, the internet message board that?s created many of the most popular memes and internet activist movements, has always thrived on a culture where users can remain anonymous. In fact, 4chan founder?Christopher Poole gave a TED talk on the value of anonymity in building an internet culture. But in contrast to 4chan, or sites like Reddit, which can seem like the wild west of the internet built through message boards, Social Number focuses more on questions and answers, like Quora, and individual identities, like Facebook and others.

MK said the organization will protect the anonymity of the site?s users, which now include self-professed members of the hacker group Anonymous, but they will not permit discussion of illegal activity on the site. He said they will block users who discuss illegal or dangerous activity, and cooperate with the authorities when?necessary, as described in the company?s extensive privacy policy. Right now, he said a main appeal of the site is that people who don?t feel comfortable using their real name, such as people in countries with more restrictive governments or less freedom of speech. However, you do need to provide an email address to sign up, so it?s not exactly identity-free, even if those emails aren?t published anywhere on the site.

But the strangest part of the site? Users can purchase t-shirts or business cards with their Social Numbers on them, and then host meet-ups or parties where they arrive wearing their t-shirts or handing out cards, in an attempt to create anonymity in real life while talking to new and interesting people. Although obviously wearing a t-shirt with your internet identity would work better for curious college students than political dissidents.

?It?s the next physical version of the virtual world,? he said.

(AP) ? Villagers in Kashmir are building bunkers as they brace for more clashes along the fragile line of control that divides Pakistan and India after the recent killings of soldiers on both sides in one of the worst flare-ups in violence in the disputed Himalayan region in a decade.

In the past two weeks, three Pakistani and two Indian troops have died in clashes on the heavily-militarized border, drawing harsh words from both Islamabad and New Delhi. Caught in the middle are villagers who have lived for years near the makeshift border splitting the region.

There has been low-level shooting and shelling across the 750-kilometer (460-mile) line since a cease-fire was signed in 2003. Civilians and livestock have died in the skirmishes, but now soldiers are being killed and many people in this village of 5,000 worry that simmering tension could boil over.

"We are perplexed and scared about recent incidents of shooting on the line of control," said Muhammed Shabbir, a shopkeeper in Chakothi who is building a bunker near his house in the village, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, just 500 meters (yards) from the line.

Some villagers built bunkers a decade ago during heavy violence in the area, but many were destroyed during a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in 2005. Worried about the recent clashes, some villagers are trying to rebuild the shelters.

"We are not certain about our future after these shootings," said Shabbir, whose wife was killed in shelling in May 2003, about six months before the cease-fire took effect.

He added that many residents who used to freely graze their livestock near the line of control are now avoiding the area. Since 2005, both countries have let local residents cross the line to visit relatives.

But Shabbir said that last Monday ? the travel day for local residents ? none of the villagers from the Pakistani side went to the Indian-held side because they were worried about escalating tensions.

Both countries claim the Muslim-dominated Kashmir region in its entirety, and two of the three major wars the two nuclear-armed nations have fought have been over the mountainous Himalayan region.

Multi-layered barbed wire fences separate the two sides, and Indian and Pakistani troops man guard towers, eyeing each other's territory.

Tensions, however, rose on Jan. 6 when Pakistan accused Indian forces of crossing the line and killing a Pakistani soldier and wounding another in a raid. India denied raiding the post. It said its troops fired across the border in response to Pakistani shelling that destroyed a home on the Indian side.

Two days later, India claimed Pakistani troops had crossed into Indian territory and killed two of its soldiers, beheading one. Pakistan denied the allegations.

Then, on Jan. 10, Pakistan claimed Indian troops fired across the border, killing another Pakistani soldier.

Political rhetoric from both capitals also intensified. Pakistan's foreign minister accused India of "warmongering" while India's army chief urged his troops to be "aggressive and offensive" when dealing with gunfire from Pakistan.

In the latest verbal barrage, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Sunday that India was reviewing its future ties with Pakistan in light of the "inhuman killing" of its soldiers.

About 30 people from at least seven villages in Indian-held Kashmir met last Monday with government officials in the town of Uri, demanding that the government build bunkers in their villages to protect them from shelling.

Almost everyone there remembers what it was like before the 2003 cease-fire.

"I was born and raised amid firing and shelling," said 28-year-old Nadeem Abbassi, speaking by telephone from his village of Gwalta. "We don't want to live like before. Honestly, we don't have any energy left in us to face such a situation again."

Many people expressed frustration that the deaths of the Indian soldiers had sparked a loud response while there had been little public outcry when civilians have died on both sides.

"There is so much warmongering and hue and cry over the soldiers' killings," said Farid Ahmed, a businessman from the village of Charunda in Indian-held Kashmir. "In our village, three people, including a woman, were killed in shelling. But we're lesser mortals and nobody utters a word when we're killed."

Earlier this week, both Pakistani and Indian officials agreed to work to ease tension along the line of control ? a sign that each recognized the risks of an escalating conflict, especially when relations between the two countries had been warming.

Their relationship hit a recent low point in 2008 when Pakistani militants killed 166 people in the Indian coastal city of Mumbai, but last year both countries took steps to mend ties and boost trade. Events during the past two weeks have shown how fragile that progress can be.

Villagers on the front line of a region that has always been the most contentious issue between the two countries are wondering whether Indian and Pakistani leaders can overcome this latest problem.

"Only one or two incidents of firing along the line of control are enough to ruin relations between Pakistan and India, and it is worrying us because we are the ones who would suffer," said Tahir Mehmood, a 28-year-old shopkeeper in Chakothi.

With $4.1M In New Funding, MasteryConnect Wants To Give ...

One of the most important roles that technology can play in transforming education revolves around data. Whether that?s by implementing APIs to make student data more transportable (? la Clever and LearnSprout) or creating integrated, cloud-based analytics platforms that give educators more insight into student performance through real-time metrics, finding better ways to make data more accessible can solve some of the biggest problems that are crippling our educational system.

Today, many educators agree that the educational process relies too much on end-of-the-year or end-of-term assessments and standardized testing, and, instead, needs a better way to assess their students? mastery of the material during the term so they can make adjustments on the fly rather than at the end of the term when it?s too late. MasteryConnect launched in July 2011 to help solve this problem by offering a cloud-based platform that allows educators to track student progress through their mastery of Common Core standards.

The Salt Lake City-based startup focuses, particularly, on formative assessments ? a type of assessment that involves qualitative feedback (instead of relying on scores) and takes place during the learning process, with the goal of helping educators tweak their activities and approach to teaching with the goal of helping students learn more effectively. MasteryConnect, then, makes it easier for teachers to create these types of assessments and share them with colleagues, parents and students.

MasteryConnect co-founder and CEO Mick Hewitt tells us that another important part of the startup?s mission is to help teachers, parents and schools understand the Common Core Standards, while allowing teachers to help drive the shift away from a situation in which students tend to be over-tested yet under-assessed. Hewitt, whose wife and father are both teachers, says that he hears time and again that teachers go into teacher-parent conferences wanting to explain why their son or daughter got a ?C? grade in Math, and, while they can point to poor grades on homework or tests as a result, they still find it nearly impossible to explain which concepts or lessons they struggled with, which in turn led to the poor grades.

That?s why MasteryConnect created a widget that allows schools to embed Common Core standards into any website so that they can easily look up those standards and better understand the connection between them and the lessons they?re teaching (or learning) and the meaning behind them. In turn, the platform makes it easy for teachers to upload their assessments and answer keys, analyzing feedback from students through the browser or MasteryConnect?s app, which are then graded automatically.

Allowing teachers to drive the assessment process, doing so in the ways that they see fit while getting access to real-time results on those assessments, has led to some promising traction. Hewitt tells us that the startup?s iOS and Android apps have seen 500K downloads to date, and standards in these Common Core reference apps have seen 40 million pageviews. In turn, its patent-pending technology is now used by teachers in 7,700 districts across the U.S. ? over half of the country?s 15,000-odd districts ? and some 23,000 schools.

To support this growth ? most of which has occurred over the last 12 months ? the startup is today announcing that it has raised $4.1 million in series A financing, a round that will remain open for the next month or so, Hewitt says. Catamount Ventures led the investment, while the second-largest chunk came from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, with contributions from Deborah Quazzo of GSV Advisors and existing investor, LearnCapital. The new round adds to the $1.1 million in seed financing MasteryConnect raised from Imagine K12, NewSchools and Learn Capital, bringing its total to $5.2 million.

masteryconnect-home

It tends to be unusual to see venture firms investing alongside non-profit foundations, but for Hewitt, it?s an important sign of validation. While the Dell Family Foundation has made a handful of investments in both non-profit and for-profit ventures over the last six years, this represents ?the first equity investment for the foundation in a U.S.-based edtech startup,? Hewitt said today, echoing the company?s blog post on the investment.

As a result of the investment, the Dell Family Foundation required that part of MasteryConnect?s schools be low-income institutions. And while that could be seen as a handicap for an education software startup amidst a space that is traditionally rife with slow sales cycles, the chief executive welcomes the requirement, helping it maintain its focus on its core user base: the public school market, both low-income and otherwise.

Not only that, but MasteryConnect wants to help transform education in such a way that learning is driven by teachers and educators, allowing them to decide how assessment data is used in the classroom. Teachers are becoming disillusioned with the types of tests they?re required to administer by the state, with many of them believing that they are far from being the most effective way to measure progress. Instead, MasteryConnect offers teachers an opportunity to do away with the old letter grade standard, using its platform to track student mastery against Common Core or state standards as they go. For both teachers and students, that?s an exciting proposition.

In terms of its business model, MasteryConnect has opted for the freemium approach, offering free accounts to teachers, which allows them to access its Learning Community to find, share and collaborate on assessments, along with including basic grading functionality. Premium accounts, which cost $159/year for teachers or $6/year per student for an entire school or district, allow for more grading capabilities and integration with Student Information Systems, more robust collaboration and reporting.

Hewitt attributes part of the success of the platform thus far to this social component, which allow teachers to collaborate on the most effective ways to create formative assessments and discover which teachers, classes and students perform best under different teaching styles and methods of assessment. Traditionally, assessment in K-12 education has been driven by top-down models, with higher-ups in the district or state determining how testing will be structured, and on what content students will be tested, with pre-determined content from publishers driving the whole process.

MasteryConnect allows teachers to play a greater role in determining what content should be used and how it should be used, as well as test the efficacy of content and different styles in their own classrooms. While the startup is pushing a greater understanding of the Common Core within education?s ranks, it doesn?t play favorites or put any requirements on how teachers use these assessments. This, in turn, has led to the sharing of 25,000 different types of assessments by teachers via MasteryConnect, and, with its new funding under its belt and the ability to scale its own infrastructure, Hewitt sees a lot more growth in the future.

(AP Photo/Mead Gruver)

(AP) ? Ever hit a mental whiteout pondering the difference between a winter storm watch and winter weather advisory?

The National Weather Service is looking at the idea that less is more when it comes to such jargon.

This winter, the federal forecasting agency is trying out simple, descriptive language to possibly replace its 14 watches, advisories and warnings for wintry weather ? from ice storms to blizzards, wind chill to lake-effect snow.

Recent example: Alongside a winter storm watch for northeast Wyoming, the Weather Service released a possible substitute statement: "The National Weather Service in Rapid City (S.D.) is forecasting the potential for a significant winter storm."

"The purpose of this project is to use language that is self-evident, that everybody would immediately understand," said Eli Jacks, the forecaster leading the experiment.

The experiment began in December and runs through March 31 at 26 Weather Service offices covering Alaska, Oregon, the northern Great Plains, Michigan, New England, Appalachia and Oklahoma. A separate website for the project avoids confusing people who just want to look up the forecast.

The clear-and-simple approach could be carried over to heat waves, flooding, dangerous wind and other conditions, but that will depend on what the public has to say.

Reaction so far has been partly cloudy. Many people don't want to give up familiar terms that have been around for generations, Jacks said.

"But then other people say, 'Well you know what, I've always been confused by 'watch' and 'warning' because they both start with 'wa.' Or, 'I've never quite known what an advisory means,'" he said.

Jackson said he's thought about the problem for years and got to work on changes about two years ago. Hear, hear, said one Cheyenne-area man as he waited for his flight to California at the city's tiny airport.

"It is confusing. What is the difference between a warning and a watch? To just have it spelled out in plain English would be handy," Roger Longstreet said.

The new approach targets watches (which predict the potential for hazardous weather while the likelihood, timing and/or location remain uncertain) and advisories (for weather hazards that are imminent or occurring but are not inherently dangerous.)

The Weather Service would continue to issue warnings when it means serious business with dangerous weather.

The Weather Service isn't alone in reconsidering how it communicates with the public.

Remember "Snowmageddon," the East Coast blizzard of 2010? Federal forecasters aren't getting that creative yet, but The Weather Channel this winter has formalized naming winter storms like hurricanes, typhoons and tropical storms.

"When they get named, they're instantly raised in the public consciousness. People just pay more attention to storms when they get a name," explained Bryan Norcross, a content director for The Weather Channel who helped develop the naming system.

In December, the storm Draco (named for an ancient Athenian legislator) dumped a foot of snow from Wyoming into the Upper Midwest. Next up were Euclid (ancient Greek mathematician), Freyr (Norse god) and Gandalf ("Lord of the Rings" wizard).

Social media played a big role, starting with an October 2011 snowstorm that The Weather Channel's social media specialists gave the Twitter hashtag snowtober.

"What we realized was that, in the future, with the reality of Twitter and the fact that we're going to send information out about storms all winter long, we're going to have to come up with some kind of hashtag for every storm," Norcross said.

He pointed out that a pre-decided list of names gets around the problem of having to come up with a creative name for every storm.

The National Weather Service in the late 1990s toyed with rating winter storms on a 1-5 intensity scale, as is done for hurricanes, but the idea didn't catch on.

The public can see how the Weather Service's proposed new wording works and comment on it at http://nws.weather.gov/haz_simp .

Ideas submitted by the public so far include trying a color-coded scale for severe weather.

Jacks said he's read all 3,000 or so surveys returned to date.

"It's a challenge," he said. "These are all interesting comments and we have to take some time to think about them."

Facebook?s Graph Search may give advertisers better ammunition to target users

The public may have given it a collective shrug and at least one analyst pronounced it ?not really a big deal,? but Facebook Inc.?s new tool that lets users perform in-depth searches taking advantage of everything their friends have ever shared with them could convince investors it is on the right track when it comes to advertising.

Dubbed Graph Search, the subject of the company?s big announcement Tuesday did not overwhelm market watchers, who expect it to have little near-term effect on revenue.

But as the company rolls it out in full ? it is still in a beta or testing mode and only available to a limited number of users ? the tool is likely to impress advertisers, said Brian Blau, research director in consumer technologies for research firm Gartner Inc.

?Users on Facebook haven?t had a way of asking for information,? he said, noting that you could browse the newsfeed or scroll through your friends? timelines but the search function was limited. ?Now all of a sudden there?s a major feature in Facebook ? with these directed searches. I think that?s a perfect fit for advertising because it?s what Google?s been doing through keyword, and Facebook didn?t have that notion before.?

That very fact formed the basis for Forrester Research Inc. interactive marketing analyst Nate Elliott?s criticism that the tool was not a big deal.

?The big news isn?t that Facebook has fixed its search tool; the big news is that it didn?t do this long ago,? he wrote in a blog post.

The big news isn?t that Facebook has fixed its search tool; the big news is that it didn?t do this long ago

Nonetheless, now that it is improving its search function, Mr. Blau said, ?advertisers are going to be thinking with the more detailed query they can better target their audience. All of a sudden they know who the individual is and what they?re searching for so they can have a better relationship with them.?

Offering a search that?s not just validated, but validated by your friends should be a powerful tool for the company, agreed Nigel Wallis, research director of application solutions at IDC Canada.

?The promise of some sort of legitimacy that?s offered by that means that I think you?ll see some really interesting results about 18 months from now,? he said.

With the soft launch of the new search tool, Facebook?s ad format has not changed, said Kate O?Neill, product marketing manager for Graph Search. The revamped search still allows advertisers to buy sponsored stories that connect with keywords and pop up as suggested searches, but there is no advertising in the search results themselves, she said in an interview.

?We?re really focused on just building out the best experience we possibly can for people who use Graph Search and think that when the product is as engaging or as good as it can be, then maybe we?ll turn to ads, but that?s just something that we don?t have any specific plans on now,? she said.

The new search is also not yet available on Facebook?s applications for mobile devices where the future of advertising is a key area of concern for its monetization efforts as more than 600 million of its billion users connect using tablets and smartphones.

However, Ms. O?Neill said, the company did use some of the technology built in developing Graph Search to power the recently released ?nearby? tab on its iOS and Android apps, which can alert you to places your friends have been.

?It is integrated that way and we really hope to do a lot more there in the future,? she said.

Facebook has been diving deeper into tailored advertising for some time, most recently through the launch of its advertising exchange, known as FBX, last summer.

Thierry Bazay, is the general manager of Canadian operations for the Exchange Lab, a trading service for real-time bidding placement of ads that works with one of the limited number of partners approved to buy ads through FBX and display targeted messages to users in the time it takes for the webpage to load.

He said the ad exchange, along with Facebook?s latest tool, suggest it is evolving to become more user-friendly to advertisers. ?They know they have this extremely valuable proposition which is the data of how people interact.?

For the same reason Graph Search could appeal to advertisers interested in targeting users based on ever-more specific information the social network knows about them, it raises a familiar and sensitive issue for the company.

?Privacy is Facebook?s Achilles heel, there?s just no question about that,? said Gartner?s Mr. Blau, adding that ever since Facebook tangled with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over charges that it deceived its customers about what information was public, the company has changed how it deals with the issue. (The charges were settled last year.)

Its announcement Tuesday emphasized that the search tool is ?privacy aware? and results would only include content that was specifically shared with the user or publicly available.

?You can certainly see that they?re going to great lengths to make sure the press communicates the fact that they?re paying attention to it,? Mr. Blau said.

Erie home-improvement contractor faces more charges | GoErie.com ...

A former Erie home-improvement contractor will face more sets of criminal charges when the state and local police cases against him reach court.

Eight new sets of charges were filed last week against 50-year-old Martin J. Deniziak, and a ninth case is pending, according to court records and police. There are now 22 active cases against the Millcreek Township resident, according to court records.

All of the cases are being handled in Erie 4th Ward District Judge Tom Robie's office. Deniziak was scheduled to appear before Robie for preliminary hearings today, but the hearings have been delayed until March 11.

Deniziak, who is listed in court records as president of the former Deniziak Siding Inc. in Erie, is accused in all of the cases of taking money for work but failing to do the work or refund the money.

The money listed as taken in complaints filed this week includes $638 for a project in the 3200 block of Harvard Boulevard in October 2011; $1,500 taken for a project in the 400 block of Shenley Drive in October; and $1,475 taken for a project in the 400 block of Brandes Street on July 31.

Erie police Detective David Walker, who has filed the bulk of the criminal complaints against Deniziak, wrote in some of the complaints that Deniziak closed his business in October.

Deniziak's lawyer, Philip Friedman, has said Deniziak's business had failed, and that was the reason for the problems.

Millcreek Township police and the Pennsylvania State Police also have filed charges against Deniziak.

He was most recently arraigned Jan. 3 on a felony count of theft by deception for allegedly taking $2,314 for a project he was hired to do, but didn't, on Oakmont Avenue in the township on Aug. 7, according to police.

Deniziak was released on unsecured bond in the case.

NFL's Playoff Schedule 2013: Broncos, Ravens, Packers, Niners Open Divisional Weekend

The NFL has reached the final 8 with a pair of rematches. The Baltimore Ravens travel to Denver while the Green Bay Packers head west to take on the San Francisco 49ers

All the talk is over! My favorite weekend of the football year has arrived and the Denver Broncos are a part of it. It feels light-years away that the Broncos were in New England on this very weekend. That team didn't have the feel of a champion. This version? Absolutely!

The temperatures are going to dip into the teens during the game. Much has been made of Peyton Manning's record in outdoor playoff game. What hasn't been mentioned with those stats are the fact that every one of those games, obviously, was a road game. It's hard to win on the road in the playoffs. The greatest quarterbacks of all time struggled on the road in the playoffs. The difference today will be 80,000 Broncos Maniacs. That has a way of making it feel warm for the home team - cold for the road team.

Joe Flacco was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL this season on the road. His Total QBR this season away from home was an awful 29.8 - lower than Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jake Locker. Peyton Manning, on the other hand, was #1 in the NFL at home in Total QBR(87.3) higher than Matt Schaub and Aaron Rodgers.

Advantage Broncos.

Where the Broncos really have the advantage is their defense going up against the Ravens offense. Ray Rice is the one guy that scares me, but the Broncos will likely do all they can to stop him, forcing Flacco to be the difference. He usually is - but not to the benefit of Baltimore.

It's close early, but the Broncos pull away late, 30-16.

The late game features a rematch of Week 1. The Niners traveled to Green Bay that day and dominated the Packers 30-22. Things have changed since then. Colin Kaepernick is now the quarterback in San Francisco and the Green Bay Packers found a running game. They are also as healthy as they have been all season.

The same cannot be said for San Francisco. Justin Smith is attempting to return from an elbow injury. He'll be fitted with a similar brace to that used by Ray Lewis. Will he be effective? While Aldon Smith gets all the publicity, it's Smith that opens the rushing lanes for him.

That should scare Niners fans. The Packers are clicking and they remember what happened that day at Lambeau Field. Playing on the road in the playoffs doesn't scare Green Bay either and even though he's talented, it is still Colin Kaepernick's first game.

Advantage Green Bay.
