London terror-bombing survivor wins at Paralympics

Seven years ago, on the seventh day of the seventh month, Martine Wright?s life was changed forever by a terror bombing.

This week, Wright wore the No. 7 on her jersey when she spiked any doubts that losing her legs would stop her from living.

Representing Britain, Wright competed in the Paralympics Games in the sitting volleyball tournament.

And while the Brits were swept by a more experienced team from Ukraine, the 39-year-old mom wore a gold-medal smile that lit up the gym.

"I will always say I was one of the lucky ones that day," she told The Associated Press earlier this year. "I survived. I don't know how I survived. I've been living my life ever since."

A former marketing manager, Wright was running late when she boarded the London subway on July 7, 2005 just as four of Osama Bin Laden?s followers launched their deadly bomb attacks.

In a flash, Wright would later say, she found herself staring at one of her brand new sneakers skewered on a piece of metal ? along with one of her blown-off feet.

Wright?s life was saved by an off-duty police woman, who wrapped her stumps in a tourniquet. She lost three-fourth of her blood and, at first, her will to carry on.

It was her mom, Wright said later, who set her straight.

?She grabbed my face,? she said. ?At the time it was all scarred and I couldn?t look at myself. And she said, ?Martine, you are still here?.?

Thus began Wright?s slow and often frustrating fight to reclaim her life from the madmen who left her a cripple.

"When you go through something traumatic in your life ... you sometimes lose who you are," she said.

First she had to relearn how to walk, on prosthetic legs. Then she learned to ski, and to fly, and to love. She married and bore a little boy.

?You're thrown in this completely new world,? she said. ?I can live my life now. It's a very gradual process."

But Wright wanted something more, some outlet for her competitive urges. She found it in sitting volleyball, a sport that allows her to compete ferociously ? while sitting on her duff.

Just like standard volleyball, it has six players to a side and three touches are allowed. But in this sport the net is lower ? and the psychic hurdles the players have had to overcome are higher.

Wright?s teamates include a British soldier who lost her legs while fighting in Iraq.

"It's such a negative thing that happened in my life," Wright said. "But I've gained something so positive. It's a miracle in itself."

Don't let Facebook's design changes trick you into sharing more info

1 hr.

While a smidgen of lipstick won't make a pig win any beauty pageants, some?design changes may affect how easily you hand information and control?over to Facebook apps.

As?guest writer Avi Charkham points out in a post on TechCrunch,?the launch of Facebook's new App Center brought a redesigned app permissions page.?While more visually appealing ??though this is a matter of opinion ??the new design?bring some pesky changes that could trick you into exposing more personal info or granting more control to apps than you realize.

For example: The old app permission request page offered two buttons ??"allow" and "don't allow ??while the new one simple has one button (something along the lines of "play game"). This leaves some users unaware of the fact that they're about to offer an app access to information or the ability to post on their behalf. Of course, someone on Facebook's side of things could argue that the app permission page does indeed outline exactly which permissions you're granting an app when you use it, but ??as Charkham points out ? details?are listed in a tiny grey font or only visible when you hover your mouse over a little question mark symbol.

And?then there's what Charkham describes as the "friendly talk trick":

In the new App Center Facebook chose to hide the term ?Permissions?. Instead of showing ?Request for Permissions? and a button labeled ?Allow? Facebook now sends you to a page full of colorful images with a single button labeled ?Play Game?.

So what can you do to protect your privacy and avoid letting some app post on your behalf? Practice constant vigilance, of course!

Keep an eye out for the tiny print, remember that you always have a choice (except when it comes to Timeline, of course), and regularly review your privacy settings to make sure that you haven't slipped up and had an app take a whole foot when you offered it a single inch.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Postcards from Mars show rover's key science targets

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Tue Aug 28, 2012 9:28am EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA on Monday showed off the first high-resolution, color portrait images taken by the Mars rover Curiosity, detailing a mound of layered rock where scientists plan to focus their search for the chemical ingredients of life on the Red Planet.

The stunning images reveal distinct tiers near the base of the 3-mile- (5-km-)tall mountain that rises from the floor of the vast, ancient impact basin known as Gale Crater, where Curiosity landed on August 6 to begin its two-year mission.

Scientists estimate it will be a year before the six-wheeled, nuclear-powered rover, about the size of a small car, physically reaches the layers of interest at the foot of the mountain, 6.2 miles away from the landing site.

From earlier orbital imagery, the layers appear to contain clays and other hydrated minerals that form in the presence of water.

While previous missions to Mars have uncovered strong evidence for vast amounts of water flowing over its surface in the past, Curiosity was dispatched to hunt for organic materials and other chemistry considered necessary for microbial life to evolve.

The $2.5 billion Curiosity project, NASA's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s-era Viking probes to Mars, is the first to bring all the tools of a state-of-the-art geochemistry laboratory to the surface of a distant planet.

But the latest images from Curiosity, taken at a distance from its primary target of exploration, already have given scientists a new view of the formation's structure.

The layers above where scientists expect to find hydrated minerals show sharp tilts, offering a strong hint of dramatic changes in Gale Crater, located in the planet's southern hemisphere near its equator.

SLANTED LAYERS EXPOSED

Mount Sharp, the name given to the towering formation at the center of the crater, is believed to be the remains of sediment that once completely filled the 96-mile- (154-km-) wide basin.

"This is a spectacular feature that we're seeing very early," project scientist John Grotzinger, with the California Institute of Technology, told reporters on Monday. "We can sense that there is a big change on Mount Sharp."

The higher layers are steeply slanted relative to the layers of underlying rock, the reverse of similar features found in Earth's Grand Canyon.

"The layers are tilted in the Grand Canyon due to plate tectonics, so it's typical to see older layers be more deformed and more rotated than the ones above them," Grotzinger said. "In this case, you have flat-line layers on Mars overlaid by tilted layers. The science team, of course, is deliberating over what this means."

He added: "This thing just kind of jumped out at us as being something very different from what we ever expected."

Absent plate tectonics, the most likely explanation for the angled layers has to do with the physical manner in which they were built up, such as being deposited by wind or by water.

"On Earth, there's a whole host of mechanisms that can generate inclined strata," Grotzinger said. "Probably we're going to have to drive up there to see what those strata are made of."

Also Monday, NASA said it used the rover to broadcast a message of congratulations to the Curiosity team from NASA chief Charles Bolden, a demonstration of the high bandwidth available through a pair of U.S. science satellites orbiting Mars.

"This is the first time that we've had a human voice transmitted back from another planet" beyond the moon, said Chad Edwards, chief telecommunications engineer for NASA's Mars missions at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

"We aren't quite yet at the point where we actually have a human present on the surface of Mars ... it is a small step," Edwards said.

NYC garbage man sifts through tons of trash to find woman?s wedding ring

Losing a wedding ring can move folks to great feats. (Isaac Brekken/Getty Images)The saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure," took on a near literal meaning after a New York City garbage man sifted through tons of trash to find one woman's missing wedding ring.

But how did an expensive wedding ring end up in a trash pile? The New York Daily News reports that Danielle Carroll lost her ring, which was already a replacement for an earlier misplaced wedding ring, while at work. The 45-year-old teacher says she and her young students were using a "slippery hand cleaner" which must have caused her ring to slide off into a trash bag.

"I was so busy that day and cleaning my hands constantly that I didn't notice I had lost the ring," she told the paper.

Carroll tells the paper she awoke at 3:30 a.m., suddenly realizing the ring was missing. She and her husband raced outside to retrieve it from the trash but the NYC Parks Department had already picked up the garbage.

Carroll left a note on a nearby Parks Department garbage truck, which read, 'Hello, I believe my wedding ring is in this truck. It is in a bag that was put in a trash bag in the park at the end of the day, Sunday. It is 5AM and I came down to the park to look for it and then saw this truck with trash in it. Please call me to tell me where this truck is going and I will come ASAP."

NYC Parks Department employee Gary Gaddist read the note and decided to intervene. He called Carroll and told her he would look for the ring, though he noted, "It really was like looking for a needle in a haystack."

But somehow the 42-year-old Gaddist located the trash bag amid several tons of garbage at Randalls Island.

"This guy did something he didn't have to do, and I find that amazing,' Carroll told the paper after Gaddist called with the surprising good news.

For his part, Gaddist said he decided to help because he could tell the couple were in love.

"It was a love thing," he said.

Gulf oil platforms evacuating workers

The Florida Keys know what to expect from a big storm, and they're getting ready. Tourists have been warned to get out of town. Officials are taking no chances with just hours left to prepare before the storm makes landfall.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Major oil producers,?including BP, Shell and Chevron,?said Sunday they would be?evacuating workers from Gulf of Mexico platforms in the face of an imminent?threat of high surf and winds from Tropical Storm Isaac.

The storm could affect an area that produces 23 percent of total daily U.S. oil production and 7 percent of its natural gas output.

BP Plc said it will shut production at all of its Gulf of Mexico oil and gas platforms and evacuate all workers on Sunday in light of?Isaac's westerly shift and forecasts that it could strengthen into a hurricane. BP has already shut and evacuated four platforms, including Thunder Horse, the world's largest. The company said Sunday it will shut its other three platforms.?

Chevron, second?to BP in Gulf oil production,?said it would be evacuating some workers directly involved in oil and gas production?from some of its platforms. "Chevron continues to closely monitor the projected path of Tropical Storm Isaac and has begun to evacuate some essential personnel from some offshore facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. Production has not been affected," the company said.

Anadarko Petroleum followed suit. "To ensure the safety of our workers and the protection of the environment, we are shutting in production and removing all personnel from our operated facilities in the eastern and central Gulf of Mexico," it said in a statement. Among the platforms it is shutting are: the Independence Hub, Constitution, Marco Polo, Red Hawk, Neptune and Gunnison.

Reuters said Murphy Oil was evacuating its Thunder Hawk platform Sunday and would do the same with two other platforms on Monday. Royal Dutch Shell said it will shut down production and fully evacuate its platforms on Monday, according to the news agency. Others who are evacuating workers include Marathon Oil and BHP Billiton.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said the storm threat has so far shut down about a quarter of daily oil production in the Gulf and over 8 percent of its natural gas production.

Isaac is heading for the Gulf Coast, say forecasters, who predict the storm?is likely to build into?a Category 2?hurricane?capable of sustained winds between 96 to 100 miles per hour. It could make landfall on the northern Gulf Coast by late Tuesday. The storm picked up strength as it passed over the warm waters of the Florida Straits after it lashed Cuba and left seven dead in Haiti.

Related story: Isaac strengthens, set to hit Gulf Coast as Category 2 storm

Memories are still fresh on the Gulf Coast over the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, which killed 11 platform workers and spewed millions of gallons of crude over three?months?into the environmentally?sensitive Gulf of Mexico. The disaster, which?was the largest marine oil spill ever,?occurred after an explosion on the?platform.?

Holliday's 4 hits power Cards past Reds

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:53 p.m. ET Aug. 26, 2012

CINCINNATI (AP) - Matt Holliday had four hits and four RBIs, Adam Wainwright won his fifth consecutive start and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Sunday.

Allen Craig homered and drove in three runs as St. Louis handed the Reds just their second series loss in 13 sets since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have won five of six to move within six games of the NL Central-leading Reds.

St. Louis' 17 hits are the most allowed by Cincinnati in one game this season.

Wainwright (13-10) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings while improving to 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last seven starts overall. The 6-foot-7 right-hander, who missed all of last season because of elbow surgery, hasn't lost since July 18 at Milwaukee.

Reds right-hander Homer Bailey (10-9) gave up five runs in six innings while falling to 1-3 with a 6.04 ERA in five August starts. He also allowed a season-high nine hits for the sixth time.

The Cardinals strung together four consecutive ground-ball singles during a five-hit third inning that plated three runs. Skip Schumaker led off with a double to right-center, and Wainwright chipped in with a one-out single into left field. Schumaker scored on Jon Jay's base hit up the middle and Matt Carpenter singled to load the bases for Matt Holliday's two-run single to left.

St. Louis added two more runs in the sixth to make it 5-0. Holliday hit a leadoff triple before Craig drove a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left for his 20th homer.

Chris Heisey and Ryan Ludwick had RBI singles in the sixth for Cincinnati, which beat the Cardinals 8-2 on Saturday.

Holliday doubled in a run in the seventh and singled in Carpenter in the ninth.

NOTES: Reds 1B Joey Votto is scheduled to start a rehab assignment Tuesday at Single-A Dayton, perhaps the last step of his comeback from two minor surgical procedures related to a torn meniscus in his left knee. The Reds are 27-14 since Votto left the lineup. ... RHP Nick Masset was awaiting the results of an MRI on his right shoulder after soreness returned following his rehab appearance with Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 21. Masset has been on the disabled list since spring training. ... The Reds and Cardinals meet one more time this season, in the final series Oct. 1-3 in St. Louis.

20-year-old College Student Beaten By LAPD For Riding Skateboard

20-year-old Ronald Weekly Jr. claims he was brutally beaten by police on August 18. Weekly Jr. is a pre-med student at Xavier University and was spending summer break at his Los Angeles home. LAPD spokesperson, Sgt. Frank Preciado reported that Weekly Jr. was approached by cops because he was riding his skateboard on the wrong side of the street. Preciado claims Weekly Jr. walked away from the officers while they were speaking to him and resisted arrest when the officers tried to detain him.

Weekly Jr. claims that he did not resist and was never told why he was being arrested. ?They grabbed my hair, they grabbed my shoulders and they grabbed my back,? Weekley said. ?They didn?t tell me anything. They didn?t tell me why I was being arrested. The first thing they tried to do was pound my face into the sidewalk,? he told thegrio.com. Weekly Jr. also claimed the officers mocked him and? did not offer him treatment for his injuries after he was taken into custody.Weekley?s father, Ronald Sr., told theGrio he arrived at the scene after his son was in custody, and was prevented from talking to him by the officers.

Weekly?s surrounding community has protested the incident and the family has held a press conference. ?We pride ourselves on having a great relationship with all the members of the community.? We?re not in a position where we Monday morning quarterback this situation. We don?t know what transpired prior to Mr. Weekly being struck. This wasn?t a typical misdemeanor. That?s why he was booked for felony resisting with force,? said Precaido in response to community dissent with LAPD.

Robot learns to see world through a mirror

5 hrs.

A robot at Yale has passed an important milestone of self-awareness by inferring information about the real world by observing it through a mirror. It's not quite WALL-E, but it's an important?step in the world of artificial intelligence.

Nico is an ongoing project under the supervision of roboticist Justin Hart at Yale's Social Robotics Lab, and has been advancing slowly for years. The latest accomplishment is subtle but interesting, and certainly tricky. It has to do with how a mirror is perceived.

Many of us have been delighted when a pet fails to recognize itself in the mirror and bristles or barks, thinking that the mirror is in fact an extension of a room?and there is another animal approaching through it. We understand, however, that it is a reflection, and we could determine, for example,?where a lamp is relative to ourselves by looking at the mirror but not the lamp itself.

What Nico?(or rather, its creators) has accomplished is this latter task: it looks in the mirror and it sees its hand, which it recognizes because it has a visual token attached. From here, it learns basic expectations of where to see its hand in normal space. Then it uses that information to build estimates of where other objects in the room are ? all without looking around at the world itself.

Hart explained in an email to NBC News that this ability is far from common in animals, since it requires a certain level of understanding about what mirrors actually?are:

What makes this exciting, in terms of self-awareness, is that the robot is able to use this knowledge that it has learned about itself in order to reason about a thing in its environment, the mirror, in a way that robots really haven't been able to do before.

His ultimate goal, he says, is to have the robot pass an iconic test first?proposed?in 1970 involving an animal (or in this case, a robot) recognizing changes to its appearance in a mirror. By noticing that a change has been made to its appearance by looking into a mirror, the subject shows conclusively that it understands that the image is not another animal, but itself.

Research along these lines could lead to improved robotic vision and motion systems that are not just mechanically aware of their position, but also understand the world in a more intuitive way. A sense of "self" and "other" is fundamental?to humans' everyday interactions, and if robots are to work closely with people, they should be able to make similar distinctions.

The paper, "Mirror Perspective-Taking with a Humanoid Robot,"?was presented last month at the Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Toronto, Canada, and Hart expects to put Nico through the second mirror test in the next few months.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC News Digital. His personal website is coldewey.cc.

Imprisoned molecules 'quantum rattle' in their cages

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered that a space inside a special type of carbon molecule can be used to imprison other smaller molecules such as hydrogen or water.

The nano-metre sized cavity of the hollow spherical C60 Buckminsterfullerene -- or bucky ball -- effectively creates a 'nanolaboratory', allowing detailed study of the quantum mechanical principles that determine the motion of the caged molecule, including the mysterious wave-like behaviour that is a fundamental property of all matter.

Experiments by the international collaboration of researchers, including physicists from The University of Nottingham, have revealed the wave-like behaviour and show how the imprisoned H2 and H2O molecules 'quantum rattle' in their cage.

Professor Tony Horsewill, of the School of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Nottingham, said: "For me a lot of the motivation for carrying out this investigation came from the sheer pleasure of studying such a unique and beautiful molecule and teasing out the fascinating insights it gave into the fundamentals of quantum molecular dynamics. Intellectually, it's been hugely enjoyable.

"However, as with any blue-skies research initiative there is always the promise of new, often unforeseen, applications. Indeed, in the case of water molecules inside bucky balls we have a guest molecule that possesses an electric dipole moment and the collaboration is already investigating its use in molecular electronics, including as an innovative component of a molecular transistor."

The research, which involved scientists from the US, Japan, France, Estonia and the universities of Nottingham and Southampton in the UK, has recently been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The discovery of the C60 Buckminsterfullerene, and the related class of molecules the fullerenes, in the mid-1980s earned Professors Harry Kroto, Robert Curl and the late Richard Smalley the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996.

It has a cage-like spherical structure made up for 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons and resembles a soccer ball, earning it the nickname 'bucky ball'.

In a recent breakthrough in synthetic chemistry, the Japanese scientists from Kyoto have invented a molecular surgery technique allowing them to successfully permanently seal small molecules such as H2 and H2O inside C60.

They used a set of surgical synthetic procedures to open the C60 'cage' producing an opening large enough to 'push' a H2 or H2O molecule inside at high temperature and pressure. The system was then cooled down to stabilise the entrapped molecule inside and the cage was surgically repaired to reproduce a C60.

Professor Horsewill added: "This technique succeeds in combining perhaps the universe's most beautiful molecule C60 with its simplest."

The Nottingham research group has employed a technique called inelastic neutron scattering (INS) where a beam of neutrons, fundamental particles that make up the atomic nucleus, is used to investigate the 'cage rattling' motion of the guest molecules within the C60.

Their investigations have given an insight into the wavelike nature of H20 and H2 molecules and their orbital and rotational motion as they move within the C60.

Professor Malcolm Levitt, of the School of Chemistry at The University of Southampton, who has used the technique nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study the quantum properties of the caged molecules, said: "By confining small molecules such as water in fullerene cages we provide the controlled environment of a laboratory but on the scale of about one nanometre.

"Under these conditions, the confined molecules reveal a wave-like nature and behave according to the laws of quantum mechanics. Apart from their intrinsic interest, we expect that the special properties of these materials will lead to a variety of applications, such as new ways to brighten the images of MRI scans, and new types of computer memory."

The work published in the PNAS paper has also separately identified two subtly different forms of H2O -- ortho-water and para-water . These so called nuclear spin-isomers also owe their separate identities to quantum mechanical principles.

Importance of Personal Finance Education to Entrepreneurs: Not ...

There are blogs on personal finance, then there are blogs on various forms of entrepreneurship, but very rarely do you find blogs that discuss both topics.

I can understand the desire to laser focus in on one?s target reader, but because I don?t see much of a blend of the two topics in the blogosphere, I (hopefully wrongly) assume there aren?t very many who feel these topics are not mutually exclusive.

From my perspective, I see these as two topics that go hand-in-hand mainly because money is at the core of each of these. Entrepreneurs may become successful financially without a solid understanding of the personal finance basics, but if they want to increase their chances of doing so and more importantly remain successful over time, personal finance education becomes critical.

Knowledge of Personal Finance Ensures Your Financial Safety ? Even If You Fail as an Entrepreneur

Although I consider myself a successful entrepreneur, both online and offline, I am a student of personal finance first before I am an entrepreneur. I was applying personal finance fundamentals in my own life way before I embarked on anything entrepreneurial.

For example, I was spending less than I was earning, I was saving for the short term, I was investing for the long term in vehicles like 401k plans and Roth IRAs. I was cognizant of the debt I undertook and attempted to eliminate all of it.

I leveraged arbitrage by borrowing money cheap and then investing it for a higher rate of return. One can argue arbitrage is a form of entrepreneurship and I agree, hence another reason why these two topics are not mutually exclusive.

The advantage of practicing fundamental personal finance in my life is that I slept at ease every night knowing that even if my entrepreneurial activities were to fail, I would be fine in the long run from a financial perspective, and I don?t mean fine as just making ends meet.

I don?t think it is prudent to leave your job and become a full time entrepreneur right away. There are a lot of wonderful things that can be said about a solid career in the corporate world as well. This attitude and approach helped me psychologically as well as I built my businesses over time, whether investing in real estate, buying a physical business or starting multiple websites online.

Personal Finance Fundamentals For Entrepreneurs

Consistently practicing personal finance also prepared me for the next level, which is entrepreneurship and the application of personal finance principles to business.

Here are some very specific areas of personal finance that I feel are important for an entrepreneur to grasp:

Budgets and Forecasts ? Budgeting and forecasting are at the forefront of fundamental personal finance. After one gets good at managing the personal balance sheet and income statement, doing so for an entrepreneurial endeavor becomes much less daunting. When you are starting a business, resources are thin, and even the most basic blocking and tackling aspects of it need to be executed adequately if you want to succeed.

1. Incorporation ? Do you establish an LLC or an S corporation? It continues to unpleasantly surprise me how many online entrepreneurs will set up an LLC because of either herd mentality or the ease of execution. Little do they know the amount of money they are excessively paying in income taxes. With an S corporation, an entrepreneur can draw a salary from their business, which is not subject to self employment tax.

2. Debt ? Is all debt bad? Can debt be used to propel your success? Not all debt is bad, and if you can recognize good debt from bad debt and more importantly how to leverage it in your personal finances, you can do the same for your business. This is where the importance of understanding arbitrage comes into play as well.

3. Income Taxes ? Do you have a basic grasp of how income taxes work? Most Americans (maybe people in general) don?t realize how much they are truly paying in income taxes. Whether as an individual or as a business, the nature of income (active vs. passive) can impact your income tax situation significantly. Do you understand all the tax deductions you are entitled to? How much should you draw in salary vs. dividends or distributions from your company? Understanding the difference between each and more importantly each one?s tax treatment can help you tremendously.

4. Asset Protection, Management and Growth ? What happens to all the profits from your business? They flow to you as the owner individual. How do you protect your wealth? How do you actively or passively manage it so that it grows or at the very least preserves its worth? Are you familiar with the different alternatives? Should you diversify? Knowledge of personal finance, even as basic as locking in your capital in layered certificates of fixed deposit can go a long way in this example.

There are several other topics as well. For example, education planning if you plan on having children, or estate planning when you start to consider what to do with all that wealth you will have accumulate closer to the time of your death. Do you want to leave a legacy? What?s the most tax efficient way to do so while accomplishing all your objectives?

Because of the space we are in and the nature of blog topics that are written about in this space, very rarely do I witness discussions of this nature, which touch on the personal finance side of the equation. I suppose that?s what personal finance blogs are for. But why not have access to a blend of the two?

We often hear about online entrepreneurs generating a significant amount of income online, but what are they doing with that income? I sure hope many have spent some of that money on their education, or hiring a professional that can help them with the personal finance side of the business. But what about those who don?t? I guess we will never know.

What Should You Do With The Wealth Accumulated Through Online Business?

Everyone has different views and beliefs about money, and while I cannot tell you what to do with it, I can share with you what I do with funds accumulated through online business.

If you are a full time entrepreneur (online or offline), your first priority is obviously to fund your living. Bills have to be paid and you need to raise yourself and your family. Anything excess of that is where personal finances starts to come into play.

I allocate a good part of my excess to savings and retirement funding. I also allocate to tax efficient vehicles that allow me to save for healthcare expenses and children?s education. I also keep a rainy day fund locked up in fixed deposits. This fund grows overtime as my family?s needs grow.

I am also a big advocate of diversification, so I also allocate to other avenues such as real estate, small scale private equity investments (there is always someone with a brilliant idea looking for capital) and physical brick and mortar businesses.

For me, diversification and the pursuit for more passive income streams is the key. With appropriate financial knowledge and management skills, a financially successful entrepreneur can reach a point where their income and investments generate enough funds for them to live on.

I have been studying personal finance for well over a decade. From everything I have experienced in life and have written in this article, it is apparent to me that entrepreneurship and personal finance are very much intertwined. I truly feel they are not mutually exclusive at all, but I?d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below?

I am definitely not advocating training yourself to be a professor of personal finance. Rather, embrace the topic and educate yourself. Knowledge of fundamental personal finance principles in my opinion is just as important as knowledge of the entrepreneurship endeavor you are involved with or are interested in.

So whether you are already successfully profiting from your online business(es) or not, invest some time in your personal finance development. This knowledge will help you tremendously whether or not you succeed in entrepreneurship.

What About You?

Do you feel personal finance and entrepreneurship are mutually exclusive topics? Why or why not? Hypothetically assuming that you are not familiar with either, if you were given only one option between the two, which one would you rather have exposure to? Why?

work for black women during the 1950s Federal Work Programs for Black Americans Documentary (1930s) ? 1930s Government Newsreel (?We Work Again?) of how the WPA put Black Americans back to working again during the height of the Great Depression. The narrator states that they are the first to lose jobs and the last to be rehired. 10% of the nation is black, while 16% is unemployed and 25% on relief. These are the grandparents of Baby Boomer aged kids. Watch and decide for yourself how these conditions and other events lead to the great racial riots of the 1960?s that all Baby Boomers live through. Catch the following irony: A white narrator extolling how ?we? have suffered but now have dignity again. The long and medium shots show integrated work situations but the close-ups only show Blacks in close proximity to other Blacks unless the white person is in a supervisor relationship. Black teachers only teach Black students, Black nurses only care for Black patients. The newsreel takes pride in pointing out that the Federal Government trains Black women to be domestics. Singer Wynonna Judd cancels concerts in Canada

NEW YORK (Reuters) - American country singer Wynonna Judd has canceled a series of concerts in Canada next week following a serious motorcycle crash that injured her husband, the singer said in a statement on Sunday.

Judd's husband, Michael Scott Moser, and the singer had been on a ride together on separate motorcycles in Deadwood, South Dakota, when Moser collided with an oncoming vehicle and was taken to hospital. Judd was not involved in the accident.

"I love him deeply and I will not leave his side," said Judd, who rose to fame alongside her mother Naomi in the 1980s as part of the duo, "The Judds," before a successful solo career that began in the early 1990s.

She and Moser were married in June in Tennessee.

Valentine disappointed with own performance

By RONALD BLUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:20 p.m. ET Aug. 18, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - With the Red Sox far from first place and their chances of reaching the playoffs slim, Bobby Valentine says he is disappointed with his performance.

Hired as manager last fall when Terry Francona left after a 7-20 fade, Valentine's team entered Saturday 13 1/2 games behind the AL East-leading Yankees and 6 1/2 games out in the wild-card race.

Says Valentine: "I'm not doing a good job. I didn't get paid to do anything other than get to the playoffs, win a lot of games, be in the thick in things right down to the end, even be in first place. The team I'm managing is not there. Simple. So my job has not been a good job, if I had to assess."

Sony quietly outs Xperia SL, gifts it with a dualcore 17GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU, four hues

That oft-rumored successor to the Sony Xperia S smartphone, the Xperia SL? Sony's now officially listing the 4.3-inch GSM device as "coming soon" on its website, along with full details and specs. As it turns out, the initial leaks were correct -- the SL is a slight refresh of the S, differentiating itself with an additional duo of color choices (silver and pink), a faster dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (up from a 1.5Ghz processor and Gingerbread). Aside from all that, it's the same media-focused phone, loaded with the same 720p display and 12.1-megapixel shooter, that we reviewed in March. We can't say we're overly excited, but you'll find more info from Sony at the source link below if you're interested.

[Thanks, Olmar]

(AP) ? Iraqi officials said Friday that a blistering string of attacks across the country the previous day ultimately killed at least 93 people and wounded many more, as the extent of the violence grew clearer and mourners began to bury their dead.

It was Iraq's second deadliest day since U.S. troops left in December, surpassed only by a wave of coordinated killings last month. Thursday's attacks seemed meant to strike fear in Iraqis and undermine faith in the Shiite-led government's security measures ahead of what was supposed to be a festive holiday weekend.

"Al-Qaida wants to send a clear message to the Iraqi people that the terrorists are still strong and able to harm them despite the huge amount of funds spent on the Iraqi security forces," said Shiite lawmaker Hakim al-Zamili, a member of Parliament's security and defense committee. "The terrorists want to tell the Iraqi people that the security forces are still incapable of protecting them."

Officials had feared an upsurge in violence coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan this weekend. Steps have been taken to ramp up security measures to protect the crowds who gather in public places such as mosques, parks and restaurants to celebrate the occasion.

Thursday's attacks began early in the north of Iraq and ended with deadly bomb explosions near busy markets, restaurants and ice cream parlors shortly before midnight.

Car bombs were to blame for many of the deaths, though attackers also deployed smaller explosives and shot some of the victims. A suicide bomber claimed seven lives when he blew himself up inside a teashop in Tal Afar, some 420 kilometers (260 miles) northwest of the capital.

Since the start of August, more than 190 people have been killed in violence across Iraq, showing that insurgents led by al-Qaida's Iraqi franchise remain a lethal force eight months after the last U.S. troops left the country.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Thursday's strikes. Coordinated bombings and related attacks are a favorite tactic of the al-Qaida offshoot, known as the Islamic State of Iraq.

Among the higher casualty numbers disclosed Friday were 21 people killed when a car bomb detonated shortly before midnight near an ice cream shop in Baghdad's predominantly Shiite Zafaraniyah neighborhood, according to police and hospital officials.

Another bomb exploded near an ice cream parlor and fruit and vegetable stalls in the capital's Sadr City, another poor Shiite district. The black, mangled body of a car sat in the middle of the street Friday. Broken plastic chairs and blood-stained fixtures littered the sidewalk. That blast killed 14, authorities said.

Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the tallies to reporters.

Hassan Karim, 23, was in the Sadr City ice cream shop chatting with friends when the bomb went off.

"I saw a big flash, followed by thunderous noise. ... I opened my eyes to find myself in the hospital with my left hand bandaged," he said. "Before yesterday, we thought there were still safe places to sit and have a nice time with friends, but with this explosion we know there is no safe place in Iraq. All the best security measures could not stop terrorists from killing people."

Elsewhere in the neighborhood, dozens of people carried the coffins of relatives through the streets Friday. Some mourners wept, while others sought solace by chanting "God is great."

The attacks Thursday coincided with the release of a video purporting to show an al-Qaida raid on the western town of Haditha in March. The SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks Islamist extremist messages, said the nearly 50 minute video was produced by the Islamic State of Iraq's media arm and posted on jihadist web forums Thursday.

Assailants in the Haditha raid killed 25 policemen, at one point raising the al-Qaida battle flag, before most managed to escape into the desert.

Al-Qaida's Iraq branch has said it aims to make a comeback in predominantly Sunni areas from which it was routed by the U.S. and its local allies after sectarian fighting peaked in 2007. It has for years had a hot-and-cold relationship with the global terror network's leadership.

Both shared the goal of targeting the U.S. military in Iraq and, to an extent, undermining the Shiite government that replaced Saddam Hussein's regime. But al-Qaida leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri distanced themselves from the Iraqi militants in 2007 for also killing Iraqi civilians instead of focusing on Western targets.

Generally, al-Qaida in Iraq does not launch attacks or otherwise operate beyond Iraq's borders. But in early 2012, al-Zawahri urged Iraqi insurgents to support the Sunni-based uprising in neighboring Syria against President Bashar Assad, an Alawite. The sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Thursday's attacks, which included several bombings in the ethnically mixed northern flashpoint of Kirkuk, were Iraq's deadliest in weeks.

On July 23, a string of coordinated blasts and shootings left 115 people dead. Al-Qaida later claimed responsibility for those attacks, which it said marked the start of a campaign called "Breaking the Walls" that was announced by the local insurgency's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
