Electronic Arts was more than just a little pleased to announce that Star Wars: The Old Republic managed to sell 2-million copies in 30 days of its release
2011 was a year where a number of records were broken when it came to the video game, or its more formal title, the Interactive Entertainment Industry.
Publishers recorded company bests, with FIFA 12 becoming the best selling sports game in history and Battlefield 3 taking the title of EA?s fastest selling game. Assassin?s Creed: Revelations became Ubisoft?s best selling game of all time as it finished in top five of the best selling games of 2011.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was the reason behind Valve?s digital distribution platform, Steam, posting record numbers of active users as well and who can forget the $775-million Activision?s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 managed to make in just five days following its release.
The trend seems to be continuing into the New Year as Electronic Arts?s Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO) based on the Star Wars universe has broken the record for the fastest selling MMO title, beating out the likes of World of Warcraft, among others.
Out of the 2-million copies the game has sold in its first month, around 1.7-million of them are active and clock in an impressive four hours of gameplay a day (on average).
During a financial call EA stated that the figures, ?makes Star Wars: The Old Republic the fastest-growing subscription MMO in history.?
There were reports earlier that the game was not selling as well as EA had forecast and this led to investors becoming cautious over investing in EA, however, one analyst pointed out that the figures everyone had in mind were too high to be considered realistically and that game was selling as well as EA had anticipated.
However, it seems that he was wrong, but in a good way, as the game was declared, ?more successful than we (EA) anticipated.?
This is great news for the franchise and for EA as the video game industry has been hit by the economic recession that plagued the international economy last year and shows room for growth in the sector as well.
