A controversial new documentary explores the epidemic of murders just across the Texas border.

Filmmaker Charlie Minn has brought his film "8 Murders a Day" to Austin. The film sheds light on the drug war and murders in Juarez, located just across the Rio Grande River from El Paso.

Austin is the 26th city to host the film which explores the mass killings in Mexico. According to the Mexican General Attorney?s Office, there have been more than 30,000 murders since Felipe Calder?n became president of Mexico in 2006.

Minn says many Americans don't realize how bad the violence is right next door.

"What we have is the greatest human rights disaster happening not just in Mexico, but specifically in Juarez where we have just a shocking wave of violence. 3,111 murders in 2010 which is greater than the 9/11 attacks," he said.

The documentary will be showing at the Regal Metropolitan and AMC Barton Creek starting next Friday.
