Quick Ways to ... - Credit and Personal Finance Blog | Credit Karma

I?ve written before about money-saving tips for the bathroom, but what about the other rooms in your home? Here are a few of my favorite time- and money-saving tips for one of my favorite rooms: the kitchen.

Become a techno-cook.

One of the best ways to get organized?and save time?in the kitchen is to use technology to help you. If you?re not sure what to make for dinner, use the Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner app. Match up the categories for ?Dish,? ?Ingredients? and ?Ready In? and see which recipes match your requirements. Or, select ?Spin Categories? and see what random recipes appear. A plus? It?s fun! (Available for Android, Free)

If you want to get your recipes organized, try the Paprika Recipe app. It?s like Mom?s recipe card box, but better! You can search for recipes and then create your own categories to store your favorites. (Available for Mac, iPad and iPhone, $19.99)

If you?re wondering how to use up that dusty can of black beans in your pantry, use Super Cook. Fill out ?Your Kitchen? list with the ingredients you want to use and see what recipes come up in the results, which are aggregated from all over the web.

Watch the portion control.

Nine times out of ten, our dinner portions are too big, meaning we?re wasting money and consuming too many calories. To control this, use a smaller plate, or a full-sized dinner plate with a wide rim (like this one). Use the rim as your guide, and don?t go beyond it.

It may seem counterintuitive, but buying meat from a butcher could save you money. By purchasing pre-packaged meat, you?re often buying more than you need. Instead, get quality cuts from your local butcher or find a grocer with an in-store butcher, and only get the quantity you need.

Do-it-yourself.

Instead of buying expensive store-bought cleaners, why not make your own? Check out this video that shows you how to make homemade kitchen cleaners for the refrigerator, oven, microwave and sink. Find DIY cleaners for your drain, windows and countertops in this Lifehacker article.

Save some cash and calories by making your own salad dressing. Bookmark this article, which gives recipes for 43 homemade salad dressings.

Freeze it.

To have some quick lunches ready to go, make a big batch of your favorite, freezable soup. Then, freeze the soup in muffin tins for the perfect single serving amount. Follow these instructions.

Don?t cave to your sweet tooth while grocery shopping. Instead of buying expensive (and fattening) ice cream, buy a bag of grapes and freeze it! The sweet frozen treat should satiate your craving and save you some dough.

For tips on how to freeze food safely and successfully, check out the Food Safety and Inspection Service?s website.
