INDIANTOWN, Fla. - Some Treasure Coast military veterans make it a point to reach out to other vets as well as our current servicemen and women.
Now, they're finding themselves with a great need of their own.
On Tuesday, a tornado destroyed VFW Post # 6023 in Indiantown. The vets were just days away from holding their largest fundraiser ever. This weekend, they're moving forward with their plans.
The VFW planned a weekend of activities for months. They decided that even with no roof over their heads, they would still help veterans and the military.
What they found in return was a grateful community eager to show its support.
From great music to great food, VFW Post # 6023 held a party with a purpose.
"Here's a five," said one man handing a volunteer a five dollar bill to make a donation.
This Treasure Coast community is eager to help the VFW rebuild.
"All the VFWs in the United States of America should contribute," said Charlie Craig of Indianwood, who comes here often.
"It was a disaster. They need help," said Craig.
"Two minutes!" shouted Lynn Wilhoit from the outdoor kitchen where she and other volunteers were busy frying up 100 lbs. of catfish.
The VFW is finding help with every catfish dinner served and contribution received as individuals and businesses do what they can to help.
"I can't believe it," said VFW Post # 6023 Commander David Shelton. "It's a display of camraderie and help.? It's a wonderful thing, it's overwhelming."
The people in this Treasure Coast community say doing their part is not an option, it's just something you do.
"It was very important to help rebuild and help the community come together," explained Leona Jones of Indianwood, who came to dinner with her family.
"It's a family oriented post," said Bob Romesberg, a post member.
"It's special.? We're a small rural community and we help each other.? We stick together," said Romesberg.
VFW Commander Shelton is still not sure how much it will cost to replace their building.
While the contents were insured, the building was uninsurable because of its age.
