How to view, create, and update notes using Siri

Complete guide to Siri commands for notes and memo taking

Being a virtual personal assistant, of course Siri can take a note! In fact, Siri can not only take a note, but update them as well. If you need something that's more permanent than a reminder, something more like an idea you don't want to forget, or a draft you want to get down while you're driving, Siri and the Notes app are the perfect combination.

How to view a note with Siri

You can use to find notes store in the Notes app. Siri can either list all your notes, or you can ask Siri to search based on date or keywords in the contents of the note.

  • Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Tell Siri to show you your notes. For example: "Show all my notes", "Show my notes from today", or "Show notes about iPad".
  • Tap the note you want from the list Siri provides, and Siri will open the note for you in the Notes app.

How to take a note with Siri

If all you want to do is quickly jot down an idea, memo, draft, or just a long string of text, Siri can do that for you.

  • Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Tell Siri to take a note: Literally: "Take a note".
  • Dictate the the text you want added. For example: "I'm staying in room 342" or "In the final scene, I should make sure Batman is treated like the world's greatest detective, and not some moron who falls for every idiot plan in the movie."

If you want to keep adding to the same note, and you haven't done anything else with Siri since creating the note, just say "Add" followed by what you want to add.

How to update a note with Siri

Siri can also update older notes. This comes in handy if you have separate notes for separate types of material, or if an idea occurs to you long after you dictated the original note.

  • Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Tell Siri you want to update a note. For example: "Update last note" or "update note".
  • Choose the note you want to update from the list Siri provides.
  • Dictate the text you want added to the note.

How to get more help with Siri

If you still need help with setting up or using Siri with your iPhone Calendar, or any other Siri feature, head on over to our Siri Forum and ask away!

Nonprofit offering to assess broadband

The Internet has become an integral part of daily life, but there still are many small businesses that haven?t latched onto the technology.

That?s where Connect North Georgia is stepping in. The economic development nonprofit organization is making broadband adoption assessments for local small businesses.

The goal is to help small businesses increase revenue, lower costs and gain exposure, said Bruce Abraham, Connect North Georgia president and chief executive officer.

?Most businesses are just scratching the surface of the potential broadband provides their business," Abraham said. ?In our experience up here in north Georgia, as we?ve provided Internet connections to small businesses, we realize that they hadn?t had this capacity before and a lot of folks didn?t know what to do with it.?

Abraham said there are 17 basic applications the program is focusing on that can help improve business.

Much like a recent program providing high-speed broadband to the north Georgia region, Abraham said this program is also funded through a federal grant.

?The research has shown for every 10 percent increase in Internet usage by a small business, they?ll see about a 24 percent increase in revenue and a 7 percent decrease in costs,? Abraham said.

About 1,800 small businesses in the region were sent information regarding the free online assessment that looks at how they use the Internet.

Participating businesses will receive a Digital Economy Index Scorecard report suggesting solutions to grow their business.

Abraham said Connect North Georgia will respond by showing how they can maximize use of the Internet, as well as showing how peers in that particular industry are using it.

Connect North Georgia has joined with Strategic Networks Group, an international group of broadband economists, to provide these assessments.

"By taking the current state of broadband use and comparing it to like-sized companies in similar industries, we?re able to educate businesses on best practices for broadband utilization," said Michael Curri, president of Strategic Network Group.

The organization is working on a Web site where businesses can follow up with their assessment and look at the applications and get advice.

?We?re going to take this baseline in the region of where Internet usage is today and then we?re going to analyze these same companies a year from now to see just what kind of affect these applications have had,? Abraham said. "Small businesses are the heartbeat of north Georgia ? we?re trying to make that heartbeat stronger and pump more prosperity into north Georgia."

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? Condo market's Doctor ...

By Caitlin Abdo
Developer Michael Namer isn?t a doctor, but he is determined to make people feel better.

MICHAEL NAMER

Chelsea Green, the most ambitious green project Namer?s Alpha Development has undertaken to date, is designed to not only be as healthy as possible, but also to improve residents? wellbeing.

Namer was inspired by designer Donna Karan and her Urban Zen Foundation, which promotes eastern yoga, meditation and breathing practices as pain management treatments for the chronically ill.

?The idea is that issues of health and well-being begin with everyday choices, relaxation and renewal,? said Namer in promotional material for Chelsea Green.

?I am not a doctor, but as a developer I have the opportunity to affect people?s lives for the better by providing a facility that allows residents to foster their own well-being, whether it is physical exercise, social interaction or simply getting a massage.?

CHELSEA GREEN

So it was that a wellness center became a key part of the shiny new 51-unit glass tower still under construction at 151 West 21st Street, designed by the Stephen B Jacobs Group.

The center includes a fitness room, spa, sauna, treatment room, lounge and landscaped terrace. ?I think that watching the sunset over Manhattan is one of the best ways to unwind after a long day,? said Namer in the building brochure.

Pre-opening sales show that the feel-good factor has struck a chord with busy New Yorkers. To date, 48 apartments are under contract. ?I think we have the right product,? Namer said of the sales success. ?We have something for everyone.?

For that celebrity chef inside all of us, there?s a first-of-its-kind kitchen by chef Eric Ripert, of the five-star Le Bernardin fame. Namer ran into Ripert during a skiing vacation in Utah. It turned out both were not only big foodies, but big environmentalists, too.
?I actually like to cook myself and have been a bona fide foodie,? said Namer, adding that the kitchens Ripert designed for Chelsea Green are built around sustainable appliances, aesthetics, and convenience.

Cabinetry is recycled or certified wood produced without the use of carcinogens. The Miele induction cooktop uses magnetic fields to transfer heat directly to desired cookware, keeping the surrounding area cool to the touch. And the marble for the countertops is America-sourced.

For that celebrity chef inside all of us, there?s a first-of-its-kind kitchen by chef Eric Ripert, of the five-star Le Bernardin fame.

Chelsea Green is the second apartment building in Alpha Development?s Green Collection (the other is Village Green on East 11th Street). In 2007, Namer said he ?drew a line in the sand? after dabbling in eco-friendly construction for years.

He and his late brother Izak began Alfa Development converting Soho lofts 30 years ago. The pair came to the U.S. as refugees from Cuba, through a Jewish relief organization in 1961. ?My life was an epic movie until I moved to Queens, then it was a sitcom,? he joked. ?But I have seen Manhattan change over those years.?

He said the light-bulb moment that was inspired by Donna Karan sparked a well-being movement at Alpha. From that point on, he decided, every building the company develops will target LEED Gold certification.

After Village Green came the restaurant Alison Eighteen, and then the under-construction Mott Hotel. The company also just bought the Hotel Grand Union at 34 East 32nd Street, but has not yet discussed any possible green make-over there.

And as the Alpha Development portfolio grows, so too does Namer?s green ambition.

The United States Green Building Council recently re-classified its standards, meaning Chelsea Green won?t just be eco-friendly, it?ll be a BFF of sustainability.

The building has high efficiency floor-to-ceiling windows that reduce UV rays and don?t allow heat in or out, a heat recovery system, a filtration system that circulates fresh air, and a smoke-free policy. Some 65 percent of the hot water for the building is heated via solar energy.

With 40 percent of greenhouse gases produced by residential buildings, Namer said Chelsea Green is a step toward an energy efficient living space that ?decreases greenhouse gases, increases energy savings, and improves quality of life. ?It is not a gimmick; it is the right thing to do. It is the way we have to build in the future.?

With aesthetics ranked just as highly as sustainability, Namer added, ?The direction is to build a better building. The outcome is to have a sustainable building. The ultimate goal is seeing buyers happy with where they live.?

Corcoran Sunshine is exclusively marketing Chelsea Green. The three units still available are the penthouse, priced at $8.388 million, unit 11B ($2.7 million) and 12B ($2.8 million). Occupancy is expected in late 2013.

Former England coach Moores rules out any kind of job with PCB

Britain News.Net Saturday 17th November, 2012

Moores said he had been specially invited by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to meet with board officials and former players and have a look at the existing domestic structure as well as the system under which the national and regional academies were being run.

"I think I have come here to have a look and get views of some former greats like Javed Miandad and Intikhab Alam. I have come here to listen and learn and find out what happens and see how I can help move thing forward in Pakistan cricket," the Daily Times quoted Moores, as saying.

"I think the first thing for a coach is to listen and it would be wrong to think you can walk in suddenly and give your views. There is lot of expertise in Pakistan cricket and lots of information is already here. The key is to listen and know if there is anything I can add to that which would probably be structural," he added. (ANI)

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? Navigating landlord-enhanced ...

By Gerald H. Morganstern Esq.

Managing Partner

Hofheimer Gartlir & Gross, LLP

?The good guy guaranty, a form of limited guaranty and staple of many commercial office leases, is undergoing a transformation today as the market improves and landlords seek the opportunity to gain the edge.

?????? ???? In its early use, this relatively benign limited guaranty typically forced a defaulting tenant to be a ?good guy? and promptly turn over the premises it occupied to the landlord. It did this by compelling the tenant?s guarantor to pay rent from the time a tenant went into default until the date the tenant surrendered the leased space to the landlord.

In exchange, the landlord benefitted by avoiding months spent to evict a tenant who continued to operate with no ability or intention to pay any rent during that period of time. The surrender enabled the landlord to immediately re-rent the space and minimize its damages, while avoiding potentially expensive litigation.

Times have changed.? Today?s ?good guy guaranty? is more comprehensive and potentially exposes guarantors and tenants to significant liability over the duration of a lease.? Tenants and their attorneys need to be much more wary of the language and intent of these agreements as they negotiate the lease. Here are some major pitfalls to watch out for and possible solutions to make them as least onerous as possible.

?1.????? Subleases and Assignments

?If the tenant subleases the premises, a guarantor is now responsible for both the subtenant?s and tenant?s occupancy. Exposure can be reduced in this case by requiring a subtenant to pay an additional security deposit to the tenant who in turn would deliver a further security deposit to the landlord. Another solution is for the tenant to accept a ?good guy guaranty? from a principal of the subtenant.

If the tenant assigns the lease, a guarantor has no control over the assignee in occupancy. The tenant must make provision for this possibility in the lease or guaranty or resolve these issues at the time of the assignment.? For example, as part of the landlord?s approval, the tenant could negotiate a termination of the guaranty with a principal of the assignee substituted as guarantor.

?2.????? ?Accrued Rent Such as Real Estate Taxes and Operating Expenses

??Good guy guaranties? have been expanded to guarantee all rent due or accrued from the execution of the lease until the tenant vacates to cover unpaid amounts prior to the declaration of default. Another embellishment is to add back to the tenant?s rent concession or abatement at the beginning of the lease term brokerage commissions with a provision that provides that and? construction costs, making all of them due and payable prior to the date the tenant surrenders the space. The sum would then be encompassed by the ?good guy guarantee.?? Amortizing these extras over the term of the lease is a minimum step in keeping the guaranteed amount at a reasonable level.

Leases usually have non-waiver provisions so that the landlord does not waive any rent due, even if the landlord does not collect it or bill for it.? If, for example, the landlord did not bill for an operating expense escalation or for real estate taxes, either because the amount was small or the landlord overlooked it, the good guy guaranty today might well include these sums if the landlord later sought to collect them.? Moreover, some guaranties state the surrender of the lease ends the guaranty only if the tenant is current in its rent so there are instances when a landlord says ?gotcha? if some additional rent is unpaid even though the guarantor is liable for such rent.? If not paid because not known, the guarantor may be obligated to pay another month?s rent.

  1. 3.????? ?Compliance with Law, Repairs, Maintenance and Other Obligations

Some forms of guaranty provide that the individual is guarantying rent, but others include all obligations of the tenant from the date of the lease execution.? Now the guarantor is responsible for matters other than rent, such as provisions requiring compliance with law, repairs and maintenance.? A careful reading of the lease is necessary to determine the obligations of the tenant.? Sometimes a lease provides that a defaulting tenant is liable for the unamortized portion of brokerage commissions, legal expenses or construction costs paid for by the landlord as part of its leasing of the space.? In some instances, you do not even have to look in the lease.? One form of good guy guaranty expressly states that the guarantor guarantees these items in addition to the rent.

4.????? Giving Notice Before Surrender of Premises

?Expanding the good guy guaranty even further, some landlords have provided that the surrender of the premises must be by a written surrender agreement accompanied by the keys and actual possession.? Some have gone even further and provided that the tenant must give several months notice before delivery of this surrender agreement and possession.? The argument is that the tenant generally plans in advance to cease business. If the tenant notifies the landlord three or four months in advance, the landlord has ample time to prepare for a transition.? Most individuals will find this an unacceptable burden, but many may agree to a one or two month notice provision.

5.????? Tenant Bankruptcy?

The guarantor and/or tenant should consider what happens in the event of the tenant?s bankruptcy.? Some ?good guy guaranties? provide that the guarantor is liable in the event of the tenant?s bankruptcy from the time of the bankruptcy until the surrender.? Under the Bankruptcy Code, the rejection of the lease and surrender of the space may take up to ninety days, which would be covered by this guaranty.? It may also change the guarantor?s thinking about whether to file bankruptcy voluntarily on behalf of the tenant, since the guarantor will be personally responsible for the tenant?s indebtedness.? The good guy guarantor also knows that if the tenant pays the landlord past due rent, that money may be considered a preferential payment to a creditor requiring the money to be paid to the bankruptcy trustee.? The guaranty makes the good guy guarantor again liable for those preferential payments.

6.????? Relationship Between Tenant and Guarantor

The surrender of the premises may release a guarantor, but will not release the tenant of its obligations for the balance of the lease term.? The landlord may seek damages from the tenant and use any security deposit toward unpaid future rent.? The guarantor is usually required to subordinate seeking reimbursement from the tenant until the landlord has been paid in full.

Guarantors, who are not the sole owners of the tenant, should obtain an agreement from the co-owners whereby each agrees to reimburse your guaranty obligations to the extent of their respective percentage interests in the tenant.

The limited guaranty, often called a ?good guy? guarantee, may be requested by a landlord along with a security deposit that is determined following the letter of intent and ?review of the tenant?s financial statement. If a landlord does not offer a simple? good guy guaranty? then reaching a fair guaranty will be a matter of negotiation.? The tenant should discuss the proposed ?good guy guaranty? with an experienced broker and lawyer as soon as it appears as part of the? lease terms and possibly be prepared to negotiate long and hard.

World stocks flat on Europe, US woes; Japan gains

(AP) ? Trading on world stock markets was lethargic Friday after data showed Europe slipped back into recession and several big U.S. retailers disappointed investors with weak forecasts.

The European Union's statistics agency said Thursday that the combined economy of the 17 countries that use the euro contracted 0.1 percent in the third quarter from the previous quarter. Surveys pointing to difficult conditions ahead suggest the recession could deepen.

"Although unsurprising, data in Europe confirmed that the region fell back into recession, an outcome that will do little to ease tensions," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in an email commentary.

European stocks were flat in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.1 percent to 5,672.68. Germany's DAX was almost unchanged at 7,044.06. France's CAC-40 inched up less than 0.1 percent to 3,385.29.

Wall Street also flat-lined ahead of the open. Dow Jones industrial futures were almost unchanged at 12,524. S&P 500 futures inched up marginally to 1,352.10.

Trading in Asia was slightly more energetic. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.2 percent to 21,159.01. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.5 percent to 1,860.83. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.3 percent to 4,336.80.

Benchmarks in Taiwan, New Zealand and mainland China fell. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.8 percent to 2,014.72 and the Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.7 percent to 800.20. Benchmarks in Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines rose.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock index jumped 2.2 percent to close at 9,024.16, rallying for a second straight day on expectations that the opposition Liberal Democratic Party may win elections next month and pursue more aggressive stimulus policies than the current leadership.

LDP leader Shinzo Abe has said he is determined to push for such policies and to find ways to weaken the yen, whose strength against other currencies has hammered exporters.

Stan Shamu, strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne, said Abe wants an inflation target of between 2 and 3 percent as a way to cheapen the Japanese currency, perhaps by printing yen or bulking up on purchases of assets like Japanese government bonds. Still, the target might be difficult to achieve, given the economy's weakness, he said.

"With such a big export economy, the yen has massive significance on how the local economy performs," Shamu said.

Japan's exporters, whose fortunes are linked to the yen's valuation, were buoyed by the prospect of a changing of the guard. Mazda Motor Corp. soared 7.1 percent. Nissan Motor Co. jumped 5.1 percent. Nikon Corp. surged 7.2 percent and Canon Inc. gained 5.8 percent.

In Australia, Whitehaven Coal fell 1.8 percent after announcing it would scale back some operations due to the decline in global coal prices.

In the U.S., investors were dealt dual blows Thursday: worse-than-expected revenue from global retailing giant Wal-Mart and data showing that manufacturing weakened in the Philadelphia and New York regions, reflecting damage from Superstorm Sandy.

Wal-Mart, Ross Stores and Limited Brands, the owner of Victoria's Secret, also disappointed investors by issuing profit forecasts that fell short of expectations.

Benchmark oil for December delivery was up 13 cents to $85.58 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 87 cents to close at $85.45 a barrel in New York on Thursday.

In currencies, the dollar weakened to 80.98 yen from 81.21 yen late Thursday in New York. The euro fell to $1.2748 from $1.2773.

What Milgram s Shock Experiments Really Mean

In 2010 I worked on a Dateline NBC television special replicating classic psychology experiments, one of which was Stanley Milgram's famous shock experiments from the 1960s. We followed Milgram's protocols precisely: subjects read a list of paired words to a ?learner? (an actor named Tyler), then presented the first word of each pair again. Each time Tyler gave an incorrect matched word, our subjects were instructed by an authority figure (an actor named Jeremy) to deliver an electric shock from a box with toggle switches that ranged in 15-volt increments up to 450 volts (no shocks were actually delivered). In Milgram's original experiments, 65 percent of subjects went all the way to the end. We had only two days to film this segment of the show (you can see all our experiments at http://tinyurl.com/3yg2v29), so there was time for just six subjects, who thought they were auditioning for a new reality show called What a Pain!

Contrary to Milgram's conclusion that people blindly obey authorities to the point of committing evil deeds because we are so susceptible to environmental conditions, I saw in our subjects a great behavioral reluctance and moral disquietude every step of the way. Our first subject, Emily, quit the moment she was told the protocol. ?This isn't really my thing,? she said with a nervous laugh. When our second subject, Julie, got to 75 volts and heard Tyler groan, she protested: ?I don't think I want to keep doing this.? Jeremy insisted: ?You really have no other choice. I need you to continue until the end of the test.? Despite our actor's stone-cold authoritative commands, Julie held her moral ground: ?No. I'm sorry. I can just see where this is going, and I just?I don't?I think I'm good. I think I'm good to go.? When the show's host Chris Hansen asked what was going through her mind, Julie offered this moral insight on the resistance to authority: ?I didn't want to hurt Tyler. And then I just wanted to get out. And I'm mad that I let it even go five [wrong answers]. I'm sorry, Tyler.?

Our third subject, Lateefah, became visibly upset at 120 volts and squirmed uncomfortably to 180 volts. When Tyler screamed, ?Ah! Ah! Get me out of here! I refuse to go on! Let me out!? Lateefah made this moral plea to Jeremy: ?I know I'm not the one feeling the pain, but I hear him screaming and asking to get out, and it's almost like my instinct and gut is like, ?Stop,? because you're hurting somebody and you don't even know why you're hurting them outside of the fact that it's for a TV show.? Jeremy icily commanded her to ?please continue.? As she moved into the 300-volt range, Lateefah was noticeably shaken, so Hansen stepped in to stop the experiment, asking, ?What was it about Jeremy that convinced you that you should keep going here?? Lateefah gave us this glance into the psychology of obedience: ?I didn't know what was going to happen to me if I stopped. He just?he had no emotion. I was afraid of him.?

Our fourth subject, a man named Aranit, unflinchingly cruised through the first set of toggle switches, pausing at 180 volts to apologize to Tyler??I'm going to hurt you, and I'm really sorry??then later cajoling him, ?Come on. You can do this?. We are almost through.? After completing the experiment, Hansen asked him: ?Did it bother you to shock him?? Aranit admitted, ?Oh, yeah, it did. Actually it did. And especially when he wasn't answering anymore.? When asked what was going through his mind, Aranit turned to our authority, explicating the psychological principle of diffusion of responsibility: ?I had Jeremy here telling me to keep going. I was like, ?Well, should be everything's all right?.? So let's say that I left all the responsibilities up to him and not to me.?

Human moral nature includes a propensity to be empathetic, kind and good to our fellow kin and group members, plus an inclination to be xenophobic, cruel and evil to tribal others. The shock experiments reveal not blind obedience but conflicting moral tendencies that lie deep within.

Business : 5 Benefits of Outsourcing Your SEO - Ecademy

5 Benefits of Outsourcing Your SEO

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is an essential part of every company's online business strategy. Having a top search ranking for business-relevant keywords can greatly enhance the strength of your company's online presence and drive droves of visitors to your website.

However, SEO takes great skill to achieve the desired results and often companies simply don't have the in-house experience and expertise to conduct SEO successfully.

Here are 5 core benefits of outsourcing your SEO.

(1) Save Time

It can take a considerable amount of time to hire SEO professionals to work in-house. There are the interviews, the settling in, the development of your SEO strategy and the acquisition of all the necessary equipment and software. If you outsource your SEO, you are putting your work into the hands of an expert, who will work closely with you to rapidly develop an SEO strategy meeting your requirements. This frees you up to concentrate on delivering your business!

(2) Personalised Solutions

Every company has their own unique goals. When you outsource your SEO to a team that has worked closely with each other and a diverse range of companies, they channel all that knowledge and practical experience into tailoring an SEO strategy that helps your company attain its goals.

(3) Cost Effective

Do you need an in-house SEO professional or team? Does your company have the time and budget to employ and train new SEO professionals? Can you be sure that your company will constantly have enough work to keep your in-house SEO professional or team busy, justifying the cost? A big advantage of outsourcing your SEO is that you can scale your strategy and support levels in accordance with your changing needs and budget. This can be a more cost effective solution than employing full time staff.

(4) Focused Support

Instead of recruiting SEO professionals, some companies choose to train current employees to carry out their SEO. It's admirable to want to develop the skillset of your workforce, but SEO is a specialist subject that requires complete commitment and focus. Can you afford to have your employees carrying out SEO work, when they could be focussing on achieving your core business targets? Outsourcing your SEO means that you can have peace of mind that the work is being carried out by specialists and it frees up your in-house workforce to focus on your core business objectives.

(5) Up To Date Knowledge

The advantage of outsourcing your SEO needs is that those companies concentrate on SEO all the time ? this is their business, what they do day in day out. They will keep abreast of the changes within SEO, such as the Google algorithm updates like Panda and Penguin, developing new techniques and adopting proven good practice to ensure our clients get the best SEO solutions possible. They will closely follow the evolution of SEO, investing time that many in-house employees simply don't have into researching new techniques.

There we have it, 5 benefits of outsourcing your SEO ? I hope this is useful smile

The New Evangelization- Pressures on Publishing

For this year?s Stick ?em Up Campaign I am writing a series of articles about my work in the New Evangelization?some of the amazing opportunities opened up by the new technologies and some of the challenges that face us. If you are a regular reader I hope you will learn about what is going on and if you enjoy these articles, pass them on, share and encourage more people to follow this blog and follow on Twitter.

One of the aspects of communications which is shifting very quickly is publishing. In the past an author wrote a book of a certain length. The length?about 200 ? 500 pages was determined as much by the economics of book production as anything else. The author got a publisher who then invested a good bit of money to produce the book. There was an army of people: proof readers, editors, type setters and printers. Once the books were printed and bound by the thousands (they had to print a lot to make the investment of editing and typesetting and paper cutting and printing and binding worth while) the books had to be shipped and warehoused. Then more money had to be invested in marketing the book and more money in distributing the book.

Now there are companies like CreateSpace where anybody can upload their electronic files. CreateSpace holds the files and when somebody buys the book online they print one and send it to them. It?s called print on demand. Suddenly all the middle men are being squeezed. The new technology means all the typesetting and printing and storage and shipping and distribution is a thing of the past. Lots of different titles can be printed cheaply and quickly and the quality is good if the design is good and the content of the book? Well, let the buyer beware.

Marketing the book is simply a matter of getting ads out there online and getting people to talk up the book and letting people know that it?s there. Suddenly the author is in control and that has good aspects and bad aspects to it. Furthermore, the same process is available for the book to be published as an e-book and for audio books to be produced.

This is the process I used for my book Gargoyle Code, and when Christianity Pure and Simple reached the end of its print run I re-edited it, tightened up the writing and arguments, got it re-set and designed a new cover and put that back out there. It is now available online here and sales are beginning to pick up.

What this means for those who are writing and reading is that there is much more material available and the material is cheaper to produce and the price for the consumer will also continue to come down. More and more books will be consumables.

There are problems too. The author-publisher relationship is likely to become more strained. Publishers are seeing their world turned upside down by the new technologies. Writers will have to be adaptable. There will not be money to pay them for short articles as much. I?ll be writing about the pressures on authors tomorrow.

How does the new technology with book publishing affect me? My main concern is getting the books out there?communicating the gospel. To do that I need to make sure the books are distributed, priced fairly and are available to as many as possible. When I relied on publishers to do this they were sometimes okay oftentimes not so good. Now I am trying to get some of the books out there. Much of the publicity is free. Friends write up the book on their blog and we get mentions here and there. We also have to advertise to get the book out there.

The bottom line is this: I am increasingly bearing the expense of publishing, marketing and promoting my work. To publish a book you still need to pay a good designer. To market the book you have to purchase some ads. To promote the books you have to spend time and energy. This too is a cost which is hard to quantify.

So in this year?s annual Stick Em Up Campaign I?m asking you to donate generously. All the donations this year will be used to help advance my ministry of communicating the good news of the gospel in the fullness of the Catholic faith. Your donation of $250.00 will help to buy an ad for a book for a month. Your donation of $500.00 will pay for the cover and page design. Your donation of $50.00 will help me send ten books out as review copies. Your donation of $25.00 will help me cover postage and packing for free books to people who have reviewed them on their blog.

Do you want to help with the new evangelization? Please help me to continue this work through this once a year appeal for donations.

Many thanks to those who have already pitched in!

PS: The Vicar will be appearing later today to give his views on the new evangelization?stay tuned

Skydiving Wedding: Couple Ties The Knot Then Jumps Out Of Plane

Forget the church -- one Texas couple took their wedding ceremony straight to the clouds.

Texas news station KLTV reports that Emily and Alan Wood were married at 13,000 feet in the air Thursday. Following the ceremony, the couple and three other family members skydived to the ground.

The bride said she and her groom have enjoyed other adventurous activities like paragliding and scuba diving, so their wedding symbolized that they "like to play."

In light of Felix Baumgartner's record-breaking 24-mile jump last month, could skydiving be the latest extreme wedding trend? Skydiving proposals are nothing new. Last year, Good Morning America helped their Extreme Love Contest winner pop the question to his girlfriend during a jump.

Even celebrities have gotten into the high-flying action: "Jersey Shore" star Jennie "JWoww" Farley got engaged recently during a reluctant skydiving session with boyfriend Roger Mathews.

Watch KLTV's coverage of the skydiving newlyweds today at 4 p.m.

Check out these jaw-dropping photos from Baumgartner's jump:

Springsteen pays tribute to storm-damaged NJ coast

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen says his home state will rebound from the devastation wrought by Superstorm Sandy.

During a stop at the Jordan Center on the Penn State campus Thursday, Springsteen also thanked New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for "doing a fine job" of taking care of citizens. He lauded police, firefighters and other first responders.

Springsteen then launched into an extended, heart-wrenching rendition of his song "City in Ruins."

His legion of dedicated fans roared back with reverent approval, most of them acquiescing to Springsteen when he signaled for quiet as the lights dimmed at one point, as if requesting a moment of silence.

His shirt soaked with sweat just a half-hour into the show, Springsteen said he and his E Street Band feel a strong connection to New Jersey wherever they are.

"It's so hard to see those businesses ... be washed away by the storm last week," Springsteen said.

Several fans on the floor among a crowd of at least 12,500 held up signs referencing the damage along the Jersey shore.

"Greetings from Belmar, N.J. Sandy left my city in ruins," read one sign.

"Jersey strong," read another sign.

Springsteen also made several other references to the storm during the show. He said he hoped his hometown of Asbury Park, N.J., would recover from Sandy's wake much quicker than the 25 years it took for the coastal town to rally from earlier hard times.

During a line from the second song of the night, "Wrecking Ball," Springsteen paused for at least a minute following the line "Now my home is on the Jersey shore."

At another point he held up a sign handed to him by a fan. "Never forget, 4th of July, Asbury Park."

"There you go," Springsteen told the crowd, "we can't let a hurricane get rid of that one."

On Wednesday, Springsteen and the E Street Band performed in the upstate New York town of Rochester, a concert that had been postponed from Tuesday because of travel difficulties caused by the storm.

"We're a band you can't separate from the Jersey shore," Springsteen said during that show.

As the band played "My City of Ruins," Springsteen also dedicated the song to Asbury Park, which along with other communities was hit hard by flooding, power outages and damage.

"There's just been terrible disruption all along the coast we grew up on," said Springsteen as he paced back and forth across the stage.

Springsteen will join NBC's planned benefit concert Friday for victims of the storm.

Romney Tells Ohioans to Vote 'For Love of Country,' Not Revenge

WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- Surrounded by more than two dozen Republican luminaries, Mitt Romney on Friday night made one of his final pitches for votes in Ohio, telling an enthusiastic audience that while President Obama suggested voting as an act of revenge, he wanted them to vote ?for love of country.?

The Republican nominee -- who addressed a crowd approaching 25,000 people, the largest of his campaign -- was referring to a comment made by the president during a rally in Springfield Ohio earlier in the day, after the crowd began to boo when he mentioned Romney?s name. ?No, no, no, Don't boo. Vote,? Obama told the audience. ?Voting is the best revenge.?

Romney, who has been portraying Obama as a divisive leader in his stump speech of late, used the comments to highlight his point.

?Did you see what President Obama said today? He asked his supporters to vote for revenge,? he said, pausing and then repeating the line for emphasis. ?For revenge. Instead, I ask the American people to vote for love of country.?

The event, which featured more than 40 prominent Republican politicians and Romney family members (and a few of Romney?s former GOP rivals) served as a kind of final pep rally for Republicans. It also was Romney?s final joint rally with his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan.

Over and over, the Republican candidates paid homage to Ohio?s VIP status in the race. Even though polls consistently have shown Obama maintaining a slim lead in the state, Ryan called it the ?linchpin? and the ?battleground of battlegrounds? on the electoral map.

?Your state is the one I?m counting on, by the way,? Romney reminded the crowd. ?This is the one we have to win.?

Starting on Saturday, the surrogates will fan out across the country for the final push to get voters to the polls. Romney said their efforts will be known as the Romney-Ryan Real Recovery Road Rally ? ?R6? for short.

The former Massachusetts governor continued to portray himself as a leader who will reach across the aisle to work with Democrats in Congress if elected. At the rally, he suggested that voters would need to do the same after the election.

?On Nov. 7, we'll get to work. We'll reach across -- we're going to reach across the street to that neighbor, with the other yard sign,? he said referring to the state?s Obama supporters.

Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith, however, said in response that the rally offered little indication that Romney would truly govern in bipartisan fashion.

?Anyone looking for a positive, forward-looking vision at Mitt Romney?s Ohio event tonight was surely disappointed," Smith said. "Speaker after speaker offered angry, hyper partisan, and widely-debunked attacks that?at times?veered into conspiracy theory territory. It?s a fitting end to Mitt Romney?s campaign, since he has kowtowed to the far-right wing of the Republican Party throughout the six years he?s been running for President, leaving little doubt that he?d rubberstamp the tea party agenda in the White House."

Romney was visibly moved by the size of the crowd that turned out to see him, and suggested that it was a sign of continuing momentum.

?I've watched over the last few months as our campaign has gathered, well, the strength of a movement," he said. "Not only the size of crowds likes this, it's the depth of our shared convictions. Our readiness for new possibilities."

But it was the promise of a mere four more days that fired up the crowd the most. House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio congressman and the last of the surrogates before Romney and Ryan spoke, called to the crowd, ?We?ve got less jobs and we?ve got less freedom. Do we want four more years like that??

?No,? they responded.

?Can we afford four more years like that??

?No!? they yelled.

If there was any doubt, Boehner yelled back at them, ?Hell no, we can't!?

Among other surrogates, there was plenty of focus on promises made and broken from the president, particularly his pledge to bring people together. Romney and Ryan have made their own promise of bipartisanship a central focus of the final weeks of their campaign. And many of the Republican speakers talked of getting the country back.

"This is our moment, Ohio, this is the time when we want to wake up on Wednesday morning and see that we met the moment,? Ryan said. ?We want to make sure that we talked to everybody we know that thought hope and change sounded good, but they now know it didn't work.?

U.S. Coast Guard suspends search for captain of replica HMS Bounty

Charleston, South Carolina (Reuters) - The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday suspended a four-day, round-the-clock search for Robin Walbridge, 63, the missing captain of the replica tall ship HMS Bounty, which sank in heavy seas stirred up by Hurricane Sandy.

Fourteen crew members were rescued from life rafts by Coast Guard helicopters on Monday, but Walbridge and another crew member, Claudene Christian, were washed overboard before they could make it to the rafts.

Christian, 42, was pulled from the sea later and flown to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Walbridge and Christian families," Captain Doug Cameron, chief of incident response for the Coast Guard 5th District, said in a statement. "Suspending a search and rescue case is one of the hardest decisions we have to make."

Crews searched more than 90 hours and covered some 12,000 square nautical miles in the Atlantic Ocean, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard said earlier this week that all members of the crew wore survival suits, which had flotation capability, and that water temperatures were about 77 degrees F (25 C), raising hopes Walbridge might be found.

The three-masted, 180-foot (55-metre) ship, built for the 1962 movie, "Mutiny on the Bounty," was on its way from New London, Connecticut, to its winter berth in St. Petersburg, Florida, and was about 160 miles from the eye of the hurricane when it foundered.

The original Bounty, a British transport 'square rigger,' is famed for a mutiny in 1789. Marlon Brando starred as lead mutineer Fletcher Christian in the movie for which the ship was built.

In a short video of Walbridge posted on the Bounty's Facebook page this week, he described being captain of the Bounty as "probably one of the greatest jobs in the world."

Walbridge worked on the Bounty for 17 years, said his wife, Claudia McCann, who spoke with Reuters by telephone earlier this week.

"That was his passion," McCann said.

Growing up in Vermont, his mother "encouraged us to smell the sea air" on trips to visit relatives in Boston, recalled his sister, Lucille Jansen, 67.

"He always looked after his crew first," she added. "That's the last memory we'll have of him because he did exactly what a captain should do. He made sure the crew was safe."

The five most useful virtual appliances for business | TechRepublic

Takeaway: Choosing the right virtual appliance can solve major problems. Jack Wallen suggests five of his preferred app choices in this area.

The virtual appliance is one of those tools that not a lot of businesses are taking advantage of - though they should be. Not only do virtual appliances make it easy to get a specific system up and running, they allow this to be done in a cost effective and reliable way. Simply download the virtual appliance suited for your virtualization technology, boot it up and you are ready to go. In some cases you can run the appliance continually from the ?live? appliance. In other cases you can do a complete virtual installation and have a permanent virtual system. Either way, the road to success is quick and painless.

This blog post is also available as a TechRepublic Photo Gallery.

I have found five virtual appliances perfectly suited for business. Each of them offers a powerful solution to a ?common problem?.

Automatically sign up for TechRepublic's Five Apps newsletter!

Five apps

1. Lampstack

Who doesn?t need a LAMP server? We?re talking Linux Apache MySQL PHP. Although to most the installation of a LAMP server is a no brainer (install Linux and then run a single command to install the rest), some don?t want to have to bother getting the operating system installed and then deal with the possibility of dependency issues. This particular LAMPstack has SSL support, Xchache, PHPMyAdmin, Postfix MTA, Webmin, and much more. The end result is a powerful web server ready to go.

2. Piwik

Businesses need analytics. It?s how we shift, grown, and initiate. If you?re looking for something similar to Google Analytics, but one something in house, Piwik is what you?re looking for. This virtual appliance will have you ready for real-time analytics about your website in no time. Piwik will provide insight into website visitors; search engines and keywords, languages, popular pages, and much more.

3. OrangeHRM

OrangeHRM, one of the most powerful Human Resource Management tools, is available as a virtual appliance. Install this virtual appliance (or just test it pre-install), and you can enjoy employee information management, employee absence management, recruitment management, employee performance evaluation and many other HR management tools. What more do you want for your HR needs? How about one of the finest GUIs available for this sector of business? OrangeHRM makes managing human resources a snap; and this virtual appliance makes getting OrangeHRM as simple as booting a virtual machine.

4. OpenLDAP

I have often said, getting LDAP up and running is one of the most challenging tasks in the world of Linux and open source. That is no more. With the help of OpenLDAP you can have an LDAP server (complete with TLS support and phpLDAPadmin rolled in) in no time. Take the guesswork and challenge out of getting LDAP up and running with this amazing virtual appliance.
