Despite the underlying feeling of sameness that has permeated his recent output, Ridley Scott is still one of the most versatile directors in Hollywood. After all, this is the same guy who brought usThelma & Louise,Alien ????,Gladiator, andMatchstick Men. Though it sounds like a project more suited for the Coen Brothers, I&8217;m still interested to script writing Ridley Scott may direct Cormac McCarthy?s Thsee Scott&8217;s take &8211; and I&8217;m even more interested to see if McCarthy is as good at writing screenplays as novels.

What&8217;s next for Ridley Scott after this summer&8217;s highly-anticipatedPrometheus?Deadline saysthe director has been speaking directly with Cormac McCarthy about stepping behind the camera on the revered author&8217;s first spec script, a Southwestern drug story calledThe Counselor. Read more after the jump.

script writing Ridley Scott may direct Cormac McCarthy?s Th,McCarthy&8217;s novels have been turned into films before:The Road,All the Pretty Horses, and the Best Picture-winningNo Country For Old Men. But they&8217;ve always been adapted to the big screen by somebody else; The Counseloris the first feature script McCarthy has ever sold, and directing the Pulitzer Prize-winning author&8217;s screenplay is a coveted job in Hollywood.

Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its ual obsessions. Its a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthys wit and humor in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthys most disturbing and powerful works.

script writingThe story follows an admired lawyer who is tempted by the drug business and ends up getting in over his head. Steve Schwartz, one of the movie&8217;s producers, gave us a little more detail about what to expect:

Indy gets dose of star power with Super Bowl (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Indiana ? the place where Peyton Manning, Larry Bird, the Hoosiers and more have created the stuff of legend ? is undoubtedly a sports mecca.

A celeb magnet however? Not so much.

But that will change over the next few days as Madonna and an assortment of stars from film, music and TV arrive for four compact days of entertainment and partying tied to the Super Bowl.

"It doesn't even matter what state or what city it's going to be in, people are going to come and they're going to party and they will enjoy the game," said rapper-turned-celeb-DJ D-Nice, who is spinning at the ESPN Next party hosted by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and featuring a performance by chart-topping rapper Drake.

Alec Baldwin is hosting the "NFL Honors," which will features celebs like Lenny Kravitz; Snoop Dogg, Nas and J. Cole are expected to perform separately at various parties; Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood are performing for "CMT Crossroads" on Super Bowl eve; and "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" is planning a broadcast after the Super Bowl with scheduled guests to include Taylor Lautner, Tracy Morgan, Tim Tebow and Maroon 5's Adam Levine. Playboy is having its annual Super Bowl party, as is Maxim, which has a superhero theme. Both promise curvaceous beauties and celebs.

It's looking to be a strong celeb turnout, dispelling some initial concerns that the choice of Indianapolis might lead to weaker participation from stars than in previous years, when the Super Bowl was held in sunny, celebrity-friendly cities like Miami and San Diego.

Tracy Kessler, an event planner who has curated the Maxim party for the last seven years, says it helps that the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens collapsed in the final minutes of the AFC and NFC Championship games, leaving the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

"When you're in a big town like Miami, you know the celebrities are coming no matter what. When you're in a town like Indy you do worry about that (turnout) until the teams are in it, and we could not have had two better teams," said Kessler, adding: "I breathed a sigh of relief when we saw who was going."

Still, there are some concerns. Indianapolis doesn't have the club or luxury hotel stock that bigger cities have. But Scott Keough, chief marketing officer for Audi, which hosts the A-list "Audi Forum" Super Bowl week, says Indianapolis is not an undesirable location for its temporary "oasis" for celebs (Spike Lee, Neil Patrick Harris, Kellan Lutz and Mary J. Blige are among the expected guests).

"I've read a lot of articles and I think people are being a little hard on Indianapolis, because they're comparing it to much larger and obviously more celebrity-oriented type of towns like Miami and places like that," he said. "In our minds, it doesn't change a thing. Whether it's Miami with the warm weather or Arizona or Indianapolis, we always want to execute a smart forum. ... We still feel it's important to be there."

And D-Nice, who has spun at several Super Bowl parties, feels the excitement is as great as it could be among his celebrity friends.

"It's definitely going to be a celeb crowd. Every celeb that I personally know, they're definitely all going to the game and they'll be out in Indy for Super Bowl weekend. It's Super Bowl, it's football, it's the one sport that we all love."

He added: "Of course Miami is Miami, it's different, sunshine, beaches, nightlight is there. But I think for everything that's missing in Indy, we're going to bring it to the city."

The trend seems to be continuing into the New Year as Electronic Arts?s Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO) based on the Star Wars universe has broken the record for the fastest selling MMO title, beating out the likes of World of Warcraft, among others.

Out of the 2-million copies the game has sold in its first month, around 1.7-million of them are active and clock in an impressive four hours of gameplay a day (on average).

During a financial call EA stated that the figures, ?makes Star Wars: The Old Republic the fastest-growing subscription MMO in history.?

There were reports earlier that the game was not selling as well as EA had forecast and this led to investors becoming cautious over investing in EA, however, one analyst pointed out that the figures everyone had in mind were too high to be considered realistically and that game was selling as well as EA had anticipated.

However, it seems that he was wrong, but in a good way, as the game was declared, ?more successful than we (EA) anticipated.?

This is great news for the franchise and for EA as the video game industry has been hit by the economic recession that plagued the international economy last year and shows room for growth in the sector as well.

Botany: Moonlighting enzyme works double shift 24/7

ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2012) ? A team of researchers led by Michigan State University has discovered an overachieving plant enzyme that works both the day and night shifts.

The discovery, featured in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, shows that plants evolved a new function for this enzyme by changing merely one of its protein building blocks.

The enzyme, ATP synthase, usually works the day shift, serving as a key player in storing energy created through photosynthesis in the chloroplast. When the sun goes down most of these enzymes switch off to prevent energy from leaking out.

The newly changed protein building block, or subunit, allows this enzyme to do another job once the sun goes down and photosynthesis stops, said David Kramer, Hannah Distinguished Professor of Photosynthesis and Bioenergetics.

"By exchanging this one building block, the enzyme gains a new function in the dark, in the roots." he said. "It's like a food processor. With one attachment it chops food. Swap it for another, and it kneads bread dough."

The building block on which the researchers focused is called gamma, a component of ATP synthase. There are two forms of gamma, gamma-1 and gamma-2. When researchers removed gamma-1, photosynthesis was completely stopped. When gamma-2 was removed, the plant could not make normal root hairs (the part of the root that takes up nutrients.) On the other end of the spectrum, plants engineered to produce lots of gamma-2 made very long root hairs.

So, the seemingly small change not only allows the enzyme to pick up an additional shift, but to also work a completely different job -- from storing energy during the day to transporting energy in the roots at night.

This particular enzyme also functions as a regulator of photosynthesis, controlling how much energy plants consume. Too much light causes damage while too little results in low energy, which keeps the plants from growing to their full potential.

Kramer's next phase of research in this realm will investigate regulating the enzyme's effect on increasing photosynthesis, which could potentially lead to more efficient plants and algae.

Kramer works in the MSU-Department of Energy Plant Research Laboratory. The research team included scientists from Washington State University, Ludwig Maximilians University (Germany), Albert Ludwigs University (Germany) and the Centre de la Recherche Scientifique (France).

Ferris Bueller-Inspired Super Bowl Ad Debuts

Matthew Broderick gets another day off in the Honda commercial.
By Eric Ditzian

In retrospect, perhaps it would have been better for Ferris Bueller to stay hidden away in Hollywood retirement. Perhaps when the classic '80s troublemaker reappeared in a viral video last week — a teaser spot leading up to a Super Bowl ad for Honda — we should have realized no good could come of hauling out a movie icon to shill for the auto industry.

And now, as depressing as an early-bird special, the commercial has arrived long ahead of primetime. Inspired by but not reprising his Ferris role, Matthew Broderick shuffles through the commercial, halfheartedly repeating lines from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and finding himself in situations ripped from the 1986 John Hughes comedy. Once again, Broderick doesn't want to work, so he fakes an illness and heads off on an adventure. When he says to the camera, like Ferris had more than 25 years ago, "One of the worst performances of my life, and he never doubted it for a second," we can't help feeling Mr. Broderick is trying to tell us all something that might not make Honda execs so happy.

Or perhaps the joke is on us. The Web has been abuzz for days about the ad and the extended version, available now on YouTube, will only ensure Ferris and Honda are part of the pop-culture conversation in the lead-up to Sunday's Super Bowl. Why the ad arrived so early, though, remains an open question.

We have many others. Is it true, as the automotive blog Jalopnik reported, that "Hangover" director Todd Phillips oversaw the effort, and if so, why is the whole thing not funnier? Why did Broderick play himself, rather than Ferris? Does Broderick really need the money? And what would Hughes, who passed away in 2009, say?

At the same time, it could be worse. The ad did deliver some amusing moments (a staring contest with a walrus, for example) and we never get tired of "Oh Yeah" by Yello. At the very least, the ad made for a far better reimagining of a beloved '80s comedy than Billy Crystal's short-form sequel last year to "When Harry Met Sally..." That viral video managed to be both unfunny and sacrilegious. At least Honda didn't turn Ferris' buddy Cameron into a vampire.
